The seven churches of Asia are seven churches mentioned in the Book of Revelation of the New Testament. "Asia" as used here refers to Asia Minor, and the churches were among the earliest Christian churches on the peninsula. The sites of all seven churches are in modern-day Turkey.
Specifically, in the Book of Revelation, the angel sent to John the Apostle, or as other theologist suppose, John the Evangelist, tells him (Revelation 1:11, KJV):
- What thou seest, write in a book, and send it unto the seven churches which are in Asia; unto Ephesus, and unto Smyrna, and unto Pergamos, and unto Thyatira, and unto Sardis, and unto Philadelphia, and unto Laodicea.
The seven churches are located in:
- Ephesus
- Smyrna
- Pergamos, modern-day Bergama
- Thyatira, modern-day Akhisar
- Sardis,
- Philadelphia, modern-day Alasehir
- Laodicea, modern-day Denizli
There is a common mnemonic for memorizing the seven cities: "Every smart person thinks, 'Start ... (ph)finish later.'"
