Greys or The Greys is the name given to the stereotypical image of the supposed extraterrestrial life UFO creature which visited Earth from time to time and allegedly may have carried out experiments on human beings.

The typical description of The Greys consists of a bipedal creature shorter than a person, with an obloid spherical-shaped head, hairless with thin arms. According to some descriptions, Greys are intelligent, humanoid extraterrestrials that appear in claims of encounters with UFO-related phenomena, especially alien abduction. The study of these phenomena is considered pseudoscientific by mainstream scientists and by virtue of their close relationship with them, Greys are generally dismissed as non-existent. Professor of History Dr. Jacobs, with a Ph.D. in Intellectual History from the University of Wisconsin about Ufology, considers bipedalism and the humanoid form to have the potential to have evolved on other planets, but biologist Jack Cohen contends that this is not probable.

Nevertheless, Greys hold a prominent place in the popular imagination. Reports of close encounters of the third kind and alien abductions involving Grey-type beings continue to be made in many countries and ufologists still search for confirmation of their existence.

Not science fiction

"Professor of History Dr. Jacobs, with a Ph.D. in Intellectual History from the University of Wisconsin about Ufology... I don't think that this is science-fiction. You've got to remember that most abductees are really not much into science-fiction. Most people I work with say they don't follow science-fiction. They haven't seen those movies. They don't know about that kind of stuff."

Parallel evolution of humanoid form

"It is true, Professor of History Dr. Jacobs, with a Ph.D. in Intellectual History from the University of Wisconsin about Ufology, that the grays don't have several eyes; they have two. Neither do they have several heads; they have one... They have two arms and two legs, and they walk upright. Biologically speaking, explains Jacobs, for locomotion only four legs beats two legs; but bipedalism frees up the hands. We all know what opposable thumbs are for; but it is not clear that the grays typically have them... Two eyes are better than one, and locating them at the top of the head so they are directly connected to the brain makes visual reports instantaneous. As a model for survival, Jacobs suggests, the bipedal humanoid appears to be an adaptive and efficient one... no one really knows have old this model might be." "he instance on the evolution of the human animal as a novel cosmic occurrence has actually not been breached by the appearance of this overtly similar entity since, with the exception of a few obvious morphological features, these beings are actually very alien."

Criticism of parallel evolution of humanoid form

According to English reproductive biologist Jack Cohen, the typical image of a Grey, given that it would have evolved on a world with different environmental and ecological conditions from Earth, is too physiologically similar to a human to be credible as a representation of an alien.

Greys want humans to think that they don't exist

"Professor of History Dr. Jacobs, with a Ph.D. in Intellectual History from the University of Wisconsin about Ufology a portion of society is stuck debating whether or not these phenomena occur. That's exactly the way the aliens like it."

Greys' native environment

"Professor of History Dr. Jacobs, with a Ph.D. in Intellectual History from the University of Wisconsin about Ufology... points out that the nose is used not only for taste and smell, but is also a 'heating chamber' for the lungs in cold climates. Nose hairs also trap pollutants. What might these various features taken in combination say about the alien environment/ According to Jacobs, we might deduce that the alien environment is "highly controlled, uncontaminated, unnatural and highly technical"

Grey society

"Professor of History Dr. Jacobs, with a Ph.D. in Intellectual History from the University of Wisconsin about Ufology... they live in a controlled society. They live in a society where everybody knows his or her job. They live in a society where everything is controlled. The ability for people to act independently is very, very circumscribed in this kind of society that they live in."

Greys' Infiltration of humanity and subsequent domination

"Professor of History Dr. Jacobs, with a Ph.D. in Intellectual History from the University of Wisconsin about Ufology... indicates the evidence suggests the aliens' ultimate goal is integration into human society and all their efforts and activities appear geared toward complete control of humans on Earth. Dr. Jacobs outlines four programs the aliens have put into effect to achieve their goals: The Abduction Program involves selectively abducting humans around the world. The Breeding Program is the process whereby the aliens collect human sperm and eggs, genetically alter the fertilized embryo, incubate fetuses in human hosts, and make humans mentally and physically interact with the offspring for proper hybrid development. The Hybridization Program is where the aliens refine the hybrids by continual alteration and breeding with humans to become more human while retaining crucial alien characteristics. And the Integration Program involves the aliens preparing abductees for future events when eventually the hybrids or the aliens themselves integrate into human society and assume control... In the final stages of the alien agenda, humans will be slowly "phased out" while the hybrids are "phased in"... According to Dr. Jacobs, "The aliens have suggested that the time is not far off when their programs will end and they will have achieved their goal."

Evidence Greys want to dominate humanity

"Professor of History Dr. Jacobs, with a Ph.D. in Intellectual History from the University of Wisconsin about Ufology... hey're not interested in politics, economics, culture, society. That they're not concerned with. And we almost never, never get questions about that. But if this were psychological, we would be getting questions like that. But they're interested in physiology, they're interested in anatomy, they're interested in the natural world, the environment, animals, things like that. Things that are not man-made necessarily. As if in the future, it's not going to matter what we have built. The only thing that's going to matter is what they do. That's one way of looking at it."

Appearance

In reports from alleged eye witnesses, Greys are described as diminutive beings which, while appearing very human-like, seem to lack or possess reduced forms of human organs and anatomical components. Individual Greys are said to appear very uniform compared to the wide range of variation in humans. Some commentators have expressed the opinion that their anatomy is more consistent with robots or cyborgs than with actual living organisms.

Height

According to reports, Greys come in two distinct morphs that differ in height. The majority are typically described as being significantly below average human height between three and four feet tall (90 cm to 120cm), with little variation in height between individuals. The height of the taller morph is more variant between individuals. It is closer to typical human height, at about five feet (150 cm).

They also appear to have more authority than the smaller individuals within their social hierarchy, and are often reported to be coordinating the operations of abductions. The larger Greys also seem to be more recognizable to alleged repeat-abductees, despite their lack of distinguishing physical features. Abductees say that they recognize the leader of their abductors by its "demeanor." Their increased authority, height, and apparently more complex psychology have caused some abduction researchers to wonder if the taller morph is the only "Grey" type to be biologically alive and if the shorter "form" could be their artificially constructed robot or cyborg servants.

Greys Anatomy

The Greys' namesake is their most commonly reported skin color. However, some reports have given variant skin colors like blue-grey, green-grey, or purple-grey. The skin is described as being extremely smooth, almost as if made of an artificial material like rubber or plastic. Greys don't appear to have scars, warts or any other common human skin disfigurations.

Cranial anatomy

The head of a Grey is reportedly extremely human-like, although much larger when compared to the body, and usually said to lack hair. On rare occasions thin fuzz is reported on the cranium in place of hair. Their cranial anatomy has similar features, but in different proportions when compared to a human. Under the head, the neck seems thin and lacking an adam's apple or any obvious musculature. Many abductees report having the impression that it seems too small to support such a large head.

In witness reports, a Grey's nose seems greatly reduced in size, to the point of merely being a short ridge associated with the nostrils, which are small and slit-like. In some cases, Greys are said to have a flat face, lacking any nasal "structure" whatsoever. External ears, if present at all, are greatly reduced. More commonly, however is a complete absence of any external ear structure whatsoever. Sometimes there aren't even visible holes. The mouth is narrow and lipless, often described as a "slit." It's almost never seen to be opened (not surprising as Greys appear to lack jaw musculature), but when it is, the witness usually reports a lack of teeth.

The eyes, in contrast to the other cranial features, are much larger when compared to those of a human. They are often described as almond or tear-drop shaped. They are frequently a focal point of abduction reports and are considered to be the alleged aliens' most memorable aspects, due to the powerful emotional impact they leave on the abductee. The eyes are all black, lacking obvious irises and sclerae. Due to this appearance, some have speculated that Grays wear darkly colored lenses over the surface of their eyes (like contact lenses). Grey eyes also lack lids, brows and lashes, although sometimes members of the taller type of Grey is reported with bony ridges above or below the eye. The eyes don't seem to move or focus in any observable way.

The Greys' eyes seem to be related to their apparent telepathic abilities. When conducting mental procedures, a Grey will often be staring into the eyes of an abductee. This staring seems to induce hallucinogenic states or directly provoke different emotions.

Body

Their bodies are usually described as elongated and lacking in muscular definition. Similarly, no skeletal structure is seen on a Grey the way it would be for a human of such a skinny build- no ribs, shoulder blades, or vertebrae are visible. The chest is so small that it seems difficult to imagine lungs of the human sort being present. Even when mere inches away from an abductee's face during the staring "mindscan" procedure, abductees do not subsequently report feeling breath or seeing the Grey's chest move from breathing. This suggests that if Greys respire, they do so in a way very different from air-breathing humans.

The Gray analog to buttocks is a mere ridge of tissue. No anal opening is present. This and other idiosyncracies has caused abduction researcher David M. Jacobs to remark "The preponderance of the evidence suggests that the aliens do not eat."

Limbs

Their legs are shorter and jointed differently than one would expect in a human, giving them an apparently awkward gait. Their limbs are described as proportionally different than a human's; their humerus and thighs are the same lengths as their fore-arms and shins, respectively. Alleged witnesses often report that the Greys' arms reach down to their knees.

Reports differ on the number of fingers on the hand, descriptions of the number of fingers range from a human-like five or lesser quantities of 3-4. Sometimes Greys are reported to lack an opposable thumb. The bodies of the dead aliens from the alleged UFO crash at Roswell, New Mexico were described as having four fingers tipped with tiny suction cups. On the feet, toes are usually described as small or absent altogether.

Sex and reproduction

Many reports feature nude Greys and despite being able to observe the entirety of the aliens' bodies, no physical manifestation of gender difference is apparent on any individual. Greys apparently lack breasts and nipples, nor do they seem to have any external genitals. Their lack of apparent bony hips and the shapelessness of their body bolster perceptions of androgyny.

Despite the lack of physical expression of gender, abductees report being mysteriously conscious of genders among their abductors. Sometimes their perception of gender is based on interpreting the behavior of individual abductors through the lense of human gender ideas and sometimes their perception seems intuitive.

Hybridization

During the "child presentation" phase of an alien abduction, Greys are reported to show apparent human-Grey hybrid offspring to alleged abductees. These hybrids have thin hair, small noses and ears and large eyes that appear to be mostly pupil. Their bodies are thin and frail, as if they were unhealthy. This aspect of abduction reports has caused some skeptics to question the veracity of abductions in toto.

Despite the common understanding "hybrid" label, not all of these alleged hybrids are described as exactly half-human half-Grey. Reports reveal hybrids lying on a purported spectrum of features between alien and human, with some favoring one "side" more than the other. Some researchers, such as David M. Jacobs have speculated that the more human-looking hybrids are responsible for apparent humans assisting the Greys in administering abduction procedures that have been featured in some abduction claims.

The process used to create these alleged hybrids has not been detailed in abduction claims, although most researchers assume a connection between hybrid creation and the sex cell samples taken from abductees during the forced medical exam. Some researchers have speculated that hybrids result through the Greys' manipulation or splicing of human DNA, rather than actual human-alien cross fertilization.

Professor of History Dr. Jacobs, with a Ph.D. in Intellectual History from the University of Wisconsin about Ufology he first step is to combine egg, sperm and Grey alien genetic material. The result of this union, hybrid.1, has been grown partially in a female human host and partly in a gestation device. The next generation offspring (hybrid.2) still look mostly alien with the large black eyes and no whites, pointed chins and high cheekbones; hair is sparse and their bodies are just a little larger. The next stage which may be hybrid.3 results from a human egg and sperm and adding genetic material from hybrid.2s. These beings look very human, may be able to "pass" as human if wearing sunglasses since they still have too much black in their eyes and too little in the eyebrow and eyelash department. Any further stages in the hybridization process and these beings could easily pass as human. Their eyes are normal - often blue, skin color is humanlike though a little pale. Their hair is generally blond, but most do not have body or pubic hair though their reproductive organs look and function normally. Their bodies which can be thin or muscular are never overweight. It is these late-stage hybrids that abductees refer to as the "Nordics" says Dr. Jacobs.

The Grey in society and culture

1890-1950

Although the exact appearance of the Grey has varied with time and media, the overall concept of "a thin diminutive grey figure with a bulbous bald head, large almond shape eyes, and minimal facial features", has existed in popular culture for over 100 years. Grey-like beings have appeared in numerous science fiction stories from the late 19th century onwards; including H.G. Wells' Of a Book Unwritten, The Man of the Year Million; in which Wells writes about the hypothesis that the increasing industrialization of society would lead to humans developing into Grey-like beings with shrunken bodies and enlarged brains, and his 1901 book The First Men in the Moon in which he describes the moon dwelling Selenites as being short, grey skinned creatures, with high foreheads, no nose, and bulging eyes who walked with a strange gait due to their oddly articulated legs.

The Conquerors

The concept was continued in comics and science fiction magazines into the early 20th century, including such works as David H. Keller's The Conquerors, which was serialized in the Wonder stories, starting in 1929 December.

1950-1960

In the wake of the Kenneth Arnold sightings, the 1950s saw an increased public awareness of ETH and flying saucers in America; leading to a corresponding increase in the appearance of Grey-like creatures in cinema and television.

1960-1970

Until the 1960s, the image of the Grey primarily existed in popular fiction, but this began to change in 1965 when the Boston Traveler published a story about Betty and Barney Hill, a couple who claimed to have been abducted. The story included details from a hypnosis session, conducted a year earlier by Dr. Benjamin Simon, in which the Hills described being taken aboard a pancake-like craft by small hairless men with no noses and slanted eyes that wrapped around to the sides of their heads.

An "alien" depicted on the Sci-Fi Outer Limits TV show, 12 days prior to the making of Hill's 'Grey' hypnosis tape

On 10 February 1964, 12 days prior to the Hills undergoing hypnosis, the science fiction series The Outer Limits ran an episode titled "The Bellero Shield", which featured a hairless, noseless "alien" with a bulbous head and 'wrap-around eyes'.

Betty Hill maintained that she had not seen The Outer Limits, and said that it was unlikely that her husband had seen the episode, because he would either have been working, or performing community activities, during the series' time slot.

In 1968, Greys became associated with the Zeta Reticuli system, after amateur astronomer Marjorie Fish compared a Star Map drawn by Betty Hill to astronomical charts, and determined that the twelve stars depicted on the map showed the aliens' home to be a planet in the Zeta Reticuli system, situated approximately 39 light years from Earth. This led to Greys sometimes being referred to as 'Zetas' or 'Reticulians' in popular culture.

1970-1980

In 1977, Director Steven Spielberg chose Greys as the alien protagonist for his film Close Encounters of the Third Kind. The Greys have since become the archetypal image of an alien for many UFO investigators and the general public. Spielberg's designs were based on drawings collected by Dr. J. Allen Hynek, a UFO researcher who used to work for Project Bluebook, but later took up UFO studies on his own.

UFO researcher Leonard H. Stringfield began to take the stories of crashed flying saucers, retrieved alien bodies, and autopsies on the bodies seriously. From a variety of sources, he built up a composite of the retrieved bodies, which seem to be that of the classic Greys. Stringfield presented his preliminary results at a MUFON symposium in 1978.

In 1980, Stringfield presented a second document to MUFON in which he presented a series of anatomical diagrams which he stated that he obtained from medical personnel who claim to have performed autopsies on alien corpses during the 1950s. His report included a number of characteristics that can be found in many contemporary Grey reports and in theatrical reproductions.

  • Overall humanoid appearance. Bodies usually described as "formed out of a mold" with identical facial characteristics.
  • Height of 3-1/2 to 4-1/2 feet (1.1 to 1.3 m) with a weight of approximately 40 pounds (18 kg).
  • Two round eyes without pupils with heavy brow ridge. Eyes described variously as large, almond-shaped, elongated, sunken/deep set, far apart, slightly slanted, appearing "Oriental" or "Mongoloid."
  • The head was large by human standards for the size of the body. It is often described as "pear-shaped." X-ray revealed a human-like mandible, maxilla, and other cranial bone structure.
  • No ear lobes or protruding flesh beyond holes on each side of head.
  • Vague nose, two holes with only a slight protuberance.
  • Mouth a small "slit" without lips, opening into a small cavity. Mouth appears not to function for communication or food ingestion. There is only a hint of a tongue. There are no teeth. There is a membrane at the back of the mouth separating it from what would be the digestive tract. However, there is no digestive system or GI tract.
  • Neck is thin, sometimes not visible because of garments.
  • Head generally described as hairless, sometimes a slight fuzz. Bodies are hairless
  • Torso is small and thin. In most instances, the body was observed wearing a metallic but flexible garment.
  • Arms are described as long, thin, and reaching down to the knee section. The legs are short and thin.
  • Hand is generally described with four fingers and no thumb with slight webbing between fingers. Two fingers appear longer than the others. Sometimes fingernails are reported.
  • Skin variously reported as beige, tan, brown, tannish, pinkish, or bluish gray. Texture is scaly or reptilian, elastic and mobile over smooth muscle or skeletal tissue. No striated muscle.
  • There are either no reproductive organs or atrophied reproductive organs.

1980-1990

During the early 1980s Greys were linked to the alleged crash landing of a flying saucer in Roswell New Mexico, in 1947, by a number of publications which contained statements from witnesses who claimed to have seen the U.S. military handling a number of unusually proportioned, bald, child-sized corpses. The witnesses claimed that the corpses had over-sized heads and slanted eyes—but scant other facial features—during and after the incident.

In 1987 popular novelist Whitley Strieber published the book Communion, in which he describes a number of close encounters he purports to have experienced with Greys and other extraterrestrial beings. The book became a New York Times bestseller, and a film adaption starring Christopher Walken was released in 1989.

1990-present day

During the 1990s, popular culture began to increasingly link Greys to a number of Military-industrial complex/New World Order conspiracy theories.

A well known example of this was the FOX television series The X-Files, which first aired in 1993. It combined the quest to find proof of the existence of Grey-like extraterrestrials with a number of UFO conspiracy theory subplots, in order to form its primary story arc. Other notable examples include Dark Skies; first broadcast in 1996, which expanded upon the MJ-12 conspiracy, and Stargate SG-1 which in the 1998 episode "Thor's Chariot" introduced the Asgard, a race of beneficent Greys who visited ancient Earth masquerading as characters from Norse Mythology.

In 1995 film maker Ray Santilli claimed to have obtained 22 reels of 16mm film that depicted the autopsy of a "real" Grey that was said to have been recovered from the site of the 1947 incident in Roswell, New Mexico. However, in 2006 Santilli announced that the film was not original, but was instead a "reconstruction" created after the original film was found to have degraded. He maintained that a real Grey had been found and autopsied on camera in 1947, and that the footage released to the public contained a percentage of that original footage, but he was not able to say what that percentage was. This incident became the subject of the British comedy film Alien Autopsy, starring popular television presenters Ant & Dec.

In recent years, public opinion polls have indicated wide public belief that aliens have visited Earth. Grey aliens are the most commonly cited. According to Dr. Steven Greer, head of CSETI, over 400 "government, military, and intelligence community witnesses" have offered testimony to the existence of aliens and UFO and/or efforts to cover up their existence.

Greys and the abduction phenomenon

Said to be one of several species of aliens, greys make up approximately 75 percent of all aliens reported in the United States, 20 percent of all aliens reported in Continental Europe, and 12 percent of all aliens reported in Great Britain. "Professor of History Dr. Jacobs, with a Ph.D. in Intellectual History from the University of Wisconsin about Ufology... made the claim, one universally accepted in the UFO enthusiast community, that abductees are likely to have children that become abductees." "Professor of History Dr. Jacobs, with a Ph.D. in Intellectual History from the University of Wisconsin about Ufology... estimates that at least 2% - 5% of the population and possibly as much as 8% has been abducted since the late 1800s."

Perspectives

While Greys are commonly portrayed as being factual/fictional extraterrestrials, many related and alternative hypotheses exist in both science and popular culture.

Greys as ancient astronauts

American researcher and self-termed alternative knowledge author Lloyd Pye advocates the hypothesis that modern Humans are the result of genetic intervention by Greys from another star system, and believes that there has been a sustained program to crossbreed Greys and Humans over the centuries. He holds that the Mexico Starchild skull constitutes empirical evidence in support of his standpoint.

Psychological perspectives

Neurologist Dr. Steven Novella believes that the physical appearance of a Grey does not represent a real flesh and blood creature, but that it is instead a byproduct of the human imagination, with the Greys' most distinctive features representing everything that modern humans traditionally link with intelligence. “The aliens, however, do not just appear as humans, they appear like humans with those traits we psychologically associate with intelligence.” Novella holds that if you were to plot the physical differences between an ape and a human, and then apply these differences directly to a human model, the resulting human would strongly resemble a Grey.

Philosophical perspectives

Philosopher Michael Grosso believes that Greys, along with many paranormal myths and legends throughout history, are the telepathic manifestation of the collective consciousness of a community or culture. He proposes that the physical form of the Grey is that of a malnourished human being, not an alien, and that Greys may be a manifestation of guilt felt by the developed world over the plight of the developing world.

Miscellaneous perspectives

It has also been suggested that Greys represent:

  • Future descendants of Humans as time travelers
  • A lifeform that may have evolved from past life on earth, such as humanoid descendants of dinosaurs returned to Earth after exploring space
  • A modern iteration of ancient folklore and myth
  • Demons
  • Part of a government-led disinformation/plausible deniability campaign
  • Extradimensional life forms
  • A product of Government mind control experiments.

Influence in popular culture

File:Thor asgard.jpg
Thor, a member of the Asgard race in Stargate SG-1

Greys are a popular theme in science fiction and have either appeared directly, or acted as a source of inspiration, in a number of different franchises. Examples within television series include, a race known as the Asgard who are a recurring race in the science fiction television series Stargate SG-1, and also a race known as the Vree on the science fiction television series Babylon 5; they are also featured prominently in the comedy series South Park, first appearing in the episode Cartman Gets An Anal Probe, where they are called "Visitors" and returning in Cancelled; and can also frequently be seen in the backgrounds of many other episodes, especially during the earlier seasons.

Other series such as Roswell use the Greys as the centerpoint of the plot; in this particular series the aliens that crash-landed in the famous town are from the planet Antar. Seven Days is another example of this, where the Roswell aliens were explicitly referred to as "greys" and depicted as such. The time travel technology present in the show was a result of reverse-engineering the alien technology, said to originate from the Zeta Reticuli star system. In this series there are references to events related to the Greys as well, including the fact that the time machine made use of Ununpentium, a substance that was alleged by Bob Lazar to be the source of energy and antigravity in the extraterrestrial spacecrafts that he was tasked with reverse-engineering at the S4 base.

File:Perfectdark3.jpg
A Maian alien from Perfect Dark.

Stereotypical designs of the Grey race have been featured in video game media as well, examples of this include an extraterrestrial race known as the Sectoids which make their appearance in X-COM: UFO Defense, other examples have them performing the role of primary antagonists in the game Area 51, where they are depicted practicing several behaviors related to popular belief such as forming crop circles and mutilating cattle. In Nintendo 64 game Perfect Dark, the Grey race of aliens is also featured, called Maian in this game. Of the two alien races present in the game, the Maians are good-natured towards humankind and one of them, who calls himself Elvis, helps out the protagonist, Joanna Dark, in some missions (the other race, the belligerent, reptile-like Skedar, are the main antagonists of the game). On the other hand, in the Destroy All Humans games, the aliens play the protagonists of the game (though antagonists to the humans).

The influence of the Greys as the most common form of extraterrestrial life depicted in popular culture has led to some indirect references, including the trophies given in the Spacey Awards which are silver busts in the form of a Grey's head. Greys also appear in the cyberpunk shooter Deus Ex, although it is later revealed that they are simply clones created from genetically altered chimpanzee DNA. The comedy Scary Movie 3 also shows Greys as being the main extraterrestrials. The crystal skull in Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull is revealed to belong to Greys. Greys are one of the most reaccuring creatures in The X-Files television show, and the paranormal investigator, Agent Mulder, tries to uncover the truth behind them.
