== You got screwed. ==

A man in Black screwed you with that purely vindictive block. I, for one, support your actions. It's clear that discussions fail regularly at DYK; if they worked, we wouldn't have had so many recent incidents there. I think your idea was too radical for WP though. Unfortunately, editors like AMiB prefer that the boat never rocks, we just sit while the leaks sink us. Sadly, all that rocking upsets too many here. If you can find some good proposal for improving DYK so it doesn't keep embarrassing us, let me know. Until then, don't give AMiB too many excuses to block you, he's button happy and with his head in the sand like that, he can't see whether he's hitting the good guys or the bad guys. ] (]) 06:01, 2 September 2008 (UTC)

Piping and acronyms

Regarding your comment on my talk page, WP:MOS is clear on this issue:

"Write out both the full version and the abbreviation at first occurrence
"When using acronyms, initialisms and other abbreviations, it should be remembered that readers are not necessarily familiar with their meanings. Good practice is to name an item in full on its first occurrence, followed by the abbreviated form in parentheses. For example, The New Democratic Party (NDP) won the 1990 Ontario election with a significant majority (first mention of New Democratic Party in the article), and The NDP quickly became unpopular with the voters (subsequent mention)."

So the first time the RCMP are mentioned, the name should be spelled out in full with the acronym in brackets. You are right that there is no need to put the acronym in brackets if it is not going to be used again. I will watch that in the future.

With regard to your comment that "readers of the articles should be assumed to know the acronym, just like we often use "USA", or refer to 'an FBI investigation...'", I don't agree. Misplaced Pages is an international encyclopaedia, not a Canadian encyclopaedia. We should not assume that readers will know twat these acronyms mean. It's not just that English speakers won't necessarily know the meanings, we should also respect the fact that there are many people who read English Misplaced Pages even though English is not their first language because English Misplaced Pages has so many more articles than other Wikipedias. Imagine a francophone Canadian more familiar with GRC as the acronym for the national police force, let alone someone from India or Romania who is reading. In cleaning up the CSIS links, I have come across several articles about American subjects where the author has incorrectly assumed that CSIS will link to the Center for Strategic and International Studies. And when I come across FBI linked or used for the first time without definition, I change that too.

Keep up the good work that you are doing on these articles, but please keep in mind non-Canadian readers. Regards, Ground Zero | t 22:23, 1 September 2008 (UTC)
