His blond hair and strong features made him popular with the female student population. He performed in school drama productions and also had small, non-speaking roles in plays at the Stratford, Ontario Shakespearean Festival. Hughes is married to fellow actress ], best known for her role as "Anne Shirley" in the Anne of Green Gables miniseries.
