40°10′50″N 45°43′12″E / 40.18056°N 45.72000°E / 40.18056; 45.72000 Vardenis (Template:Lang-hy; anciently, Vasakashen; until 1969, Basargechar and Basargech’ar) is a city located on the southern shores of Lake Sevan in Armenia. It is located in the Gegharkunik Province (marz). It has a population of 12,363 and it was settled by Armenians from Western Armenia in 1830. There are Bronze Age tombs and a large late 19th/early 20th century Astvatsatsin church, built on earlier foundations. Surrounding the church are fine khachkars and tombstones of a 16th century burial ground.
