"Lingam" is the Sanskrit word for penis. As well as being used literally, the term is used for a symbolic representation of the male sexual organ, associated with the worship of the Hindu god Shiva. A stone lingam is a naturally occurring ovular stone, also associated with Hinduism.
In San Francisco, in the late 1980s, a large parking obstacle, shaped like a cylinder with a hemispherical top, was kept in storage near a park; but when it became decorated with the markings of worshippers who only noted its resemblance to a stylized lingam, the newly popular object took a a different significance and use.
