Oj svijetla majska zoro | |
Oj, svijetla majska zoro (Ој, свијетла мајска зоро) ("Oh, Bright Dawn of May") is the official state anthem of Montenegro. Before becoming the anthem, it was a popular folk song of Montenegrins, with many variations. It was a Montenegrin folk song until World War II when Sekula Drljević proclaimed it for anthem of a Montenegrin fascist puppet state as "Eternal Our..." (Vječna naša...). It is criticized for its lyrics which are based on the song of a WWII war criminal and Nazi collaborator.

Oj svijetla majska zoro Volimo vas, brda tvrda, Dok lovćenskoj našoj misli Rijeka će naših vala, |
Ој свијетла мајска зоро Волимо вас, брда тврда, Док ловћенској нашој мисли Ријека ће наших вала, |
Oh, bright dawn of May We love you, the rocky hills While our unity gives wings A river of our waves, |
As sung
Although those are the official lyrics, a lot of verses are repeated in order to follow the rhythmic composition. To sing the anthem properly, one must follow the text like this:
Montenegrin - Latin | Montenegrin - Cyrillic |
---|---|
1. Sinovi smo tvog stijenja Volimo vas, brda tvrda, Majko naša Crna Goro 2. Dok lovćenskoj našoj misli Rijeka će naših vala Glas nositi okeanu Da je vječna Crna Gora |
1. Синови смо твог стијења Волимо вас, брда тврда Мајко наша Црна Горо 2. Док ловћенској нашој мисли Ријека ће наших вала Глас носити океану Да је вјечна Црна Гора |
History
Original lyrics
These are the original lyrics of the song. In this form it was sang for the first time in 1863 at the "Heroic Plays in three Parts with the Battle of Grahovo Singing" as a Montenegrin folk song under the name "Oh, Light Dawn of Heroism, oh".
Montenegrin - Cyrillic | Montenegrin - Latin | English |
---|---|---|
Ој јунаштва свјетла зоро, Једина си за слободу |
Oj junaštva svijetla zoro, Jedina si za slobodu |
O, bright dawn of heroism, You are the only freedom |
World War II
Sekula Drljević, the leader of the pro-separatist Montenegrin Federalist Party rewrote the text in 1937. As leader of the Montenegrin Government in Exile in 1944 he published it as official anthem of the Fascist puppet-state Independent State of Montenegro in Zagreb, the capital of the Ustashi Independent State of Croatia. He wrote it in Croatian under the name "Vječna naša..." ("Eternal Our...") explicitly removing references to Serb nationhood as a mark of protest against Serbian hegemony in Yugoslavia. It celebrates the Montenegrin resistance under the Lovćen mountain, cleansing of Muslims from Montenegro and a hypothetical Greater Montenegrin state that would include Herzegovina and northern Albania, aimed by Sekula and his supporters.
