Ajith (born May 1, 1971 in Hyderabad, Andhra Pradesh, India) is a popular Indian Tamil actor and a race car driver with a huge fan following. He is called "Thala" (Head or Leader) by his fans and is titled as "Ultimate Star Ajith" in his movies.


Film Career

Ajith started his film career with a Telugu Movie Prema Pustagam in 1993 .Though the movie was not a big commercial hit, the film industry took notice of him.His next film was in Tamil called Amaravathi. Following Amaravathi he acted in Pasamalargal,Pavithra,Rajavin Parvaiyelae. All these films familiarised his lover-boy looks to the people of Tamil Nadu (South Indian state). But he still had to prove to the world that he was a bankable star.

The film was a hit and it also received a National Award (award given by the Government of India) for the director. Then came the biggest hit in his career - Vaali. Vaali helped Ajith solidify his reputation as it was a huge blockbuster, running packed houses for 250 days. Also, it made him a super star overnight. From there on, there was no stopping him. He ruled with continous hits like,Unnai Thedi, Aanandha Poongaatre, Nee Varuvai Ena, Amarkalam, Mughavari, Kandukondain Kandukondain, Deena, Citizen, Poovellam Un Vaasam , and Asoka .

Then came some hiccups in the form of films such as, Red and Raja but he came back strong with, Villain directed by K.S.Ravikumar which was a tremendous hit. Due to his interest in car racing, he lost his grip on the world of Kollywood by choosing films such as Anjineya and Jana. In 2004 the film Attahasam came as a welcome relief from his previous slew of bad films. Now, he has declared that there will be no more racing and he is going to concentrate only on acting. 2006 looks to be a great year as he has many big films waiting to be released.

Personal life

Ajith is the middle son of three, born to a Sindhi mother and Malayalee father. Ajith dropped out of school to become a race-car driver. After his surgery for a broken vertebra he lost feeling in his legs, but he took on a vow to recover and walked all the way from his home in Madras to the Balaji shrine in Tirupathi, in Andhra Pradesh. He was a salesman in the garment export business for a while, and also tried a career in modeling. He starred in a few commercial advertisements, which eventually led him to the film industry.

In Armarkalam, he was paired with fellow actress Shalini for the first time. The film was a hit, and Ajith fell for his leading lady, who he later married. Ajith is active in spreading awareness of the Green Revolution, an effort to clean up the Chennai environment and encouraging people to plant saplings.

Speciality

Ajith is especially known for his dual roles. In the film Vaali he played twins - one a ladies' man and the other a deaf and dumb business man obsessed with his brother's wife. Other dual roles were as a fisherman father and advocate son in Citizen, a handicapped man and an angry young man in Villain, and as a Tuticorin don and a driving school owner in Attahasam. He dons a triple role in the upcoming movie Godfather.
