Dominion is a designer card game created by Donald X. Vaccarino, and published by Rio Grande Games.

The game was released at Spiel 2008 in multiple languages. It is published by Rio Grande Games. It was voted the best game of the fair by the Fairplay polls with a rating of 1.75 from 147 votes. Within two months of its release, Dominion was one of the top ten games according to BoardGameGeek ratings.

Gameplay

The game is a card game in which the players compete to create the most valuable Kingdom (i.e. personal deck of cards). There are 4 kinds of cards, Treasure cards (Copper, Silver, Gold), Victory cards (Estate, Duchy, Province - Worth 1/3/6 Victory points), Kingdom cards (various action cards) and Curses (worth -1 Victory point and which are normally only used as a result of Kingdom cards). Each card has a cost to purchase which is paid in treasure cards.

The game includes 25 different Kingdom cards, but for each game 10 of these are selected to create interaction and re-playability. The selected Kingdom cards, the Treasure cards, Victory cards and the Curses are put on the table in piles available for all players to purchase (or obtain through actions). Each player starts with an identical deck consisting of 7 Copper cards and 3 Estate cards. The deck is shuffled and the player draws five cards to form their hand.

Each turn follows an A, B, C & D structure:

  • Action. If the player has a Kingdom card in their hand they may now play it. Typical actions include drawing more cards, being allowed to play more Kingdom cards or to be allowed to buy more cards in the Buy phase.
  • Buy. The player may now buy a card. This may be adjusted if the player has played suitable Kingdom cards in the action phase. The player pays by discarding Treasure cards onto his/her personal discard pile. Any card bought also goes on the discard pile.
  • Cleanup. The player now discards any remaining cards in their hand and puts them on their personal discard pile.
  • Draw. Next the player draws 5 new cards from their deck. Should the player run out of cards in their deck, the discard pile is reshuffled to create a new deck from which the player can draw the necessary cards.

The game ends when either the pile of Province cards or 3 other piles of supply cards are depleted. At this point the players take all cards in their deck and the discard pile, and counts the Victory points to determine the winner.

History

During development, Dominion was originally called "Castle Builder" and then, later, "Game X".
