Royal Rumble (2009) is a forthcoming professional wrestling pay-per-view event produced by World Wrestling Entertainment (WWE), which is scheduled to take place on January 25, 2009, at Joe Louis Arena in Detroit, Michigan. The event will be the 22nd event produced under the Royal Rumble name and will feature wrestlers from the Raw, SmackDown, and ECW brands. Three professional wrestling matches are currently scheduled on the event's card.

All wrestlers will be from the Raw, SmackDown, and ECW brands–a storyline division in which WWE employees are assigned to different television programs of the same name.

JBL received the title shot against Cena after winning a Fatal Four-Way Elimination match on the December 29, 2008 edition of Raw, defeating Chris Jericho (Christopher Irvine), Randy Orton, and Shawn Michaels (Michael Hickenbottom). Another feud on Raw is between Beth Phoenix (Elizabeth Carolan) and Melina (Melina Perez), who are battling over the WWE Women's Championship. Melina received a title match against Phoenix after winning a Divas battle royal on December 29, 2008 edition of Raw.
