Edwin Coupland Shaw (1863 – 1941) studied at Sheffield Scientific School at Yale University. He was an executive with the B.F. Goodrich Rubber Company of Akron, Ohio forerunner of Goodrich Corporation who with his wife Jennifer Bond Shaw was active in the civics and philanthropic life of Akron. They were organizers of the Akron Institute of Art now the Akron Art Museum. Edwin Coupland Shaw sponsored the Springfield Sanitarium with work and donations resulting in it's being renamed Edwin Coupland Shaw Rehabilitation Hospital now part of Akron General Health System. He was also founder of the Akron Community Foundation.
