• 25 - World Wrestling Entertainment presents Royal Rumble

• On the December 16, 2008 taping of Total Nonstop Action Wrestling's (TNA) Impact!, Consequences Creed and Jay Lethal cashed in Lethal's Feast or Fired World Tag Team Title opportunity and defeated Beer Money, Inc (Robert Roode and James Storm) for the TNA World Tag Team Championship, which aired on January 8, 2009.
• World Wrestling Entertainment (WWE) released Bam Neely, D-Lo Brown, Gavin Spears, Jim Korderas, Kevin Thorn, Matt Cappotelli, Mike Kruel, Mickie Henson, Ron Simmons, Sgt. Slaughter, Tim White, and Val Venis from their contracts on January 9 as part of a budget cut.
• TNA reported on January 10 that Christy Hemme had injured her neck, and that she would require surgery. She was scheduled to face Awesome Kong for the TNA Women's Knockout Championship at Genesis; this match was replaced by a Six-woman tag team match.
• At TNA Genesis on January 11:
  • Alex Shelly defeated Chris Sabin in a tournament final singles match to win the TNA X Division Championship
  • Beer Money, Inc. (James Storm and Robert Roode) won the TNA World Tag Team Championship by defeating defending champions, Consequences Creed and Jay Lethal, and the team of Abyss and Matt Morgan in a tag team 3-Way Dance.
  • Mick Foley wrestled his first match in TNA; he teamed with Brother Devon and A.J. Styles to defeat Cute Kip and The Main Event Mafia (Booker T and Scott Steiner) in a Six-man tag team hardcore match.
• On January 12:
  • WWE announced that "Stone Cold" Steve Austin's induction into the Hall of Fame would lead the Class of 2009.
  • Jack Swagger defeated Matt Hardy to win the ECW Championship, and his first title in WWE; this title change aired on January 13.
• Victoria announced her retirement from professional wrestling, after wrestling her final match in WWE on the January 13 episode of Friday Night SmackDown against Michelle McCool; this episode aired on January 16.
• On January 16, Hardcore Holly was released from his WWE contract.

• At the Royal Rumble on January 25:

• Melina defeated Beth Phoenix to win her third WWE Women's Championship.
• Edge won his fourth WWE Championship by defeating Jeff Hardy.
• During the Royal Rumble match:

• Rob Van Dam returned to WWE for one night only by entering at number 25.
• Randy Orton, who entered at number 8, last eliminated Triple H to win the match and a WWE, World Heavyweight, or ECW Championship match at WrestleMania XXV.

• On January 26, Ring of Honor announced that they had signed a long-term television deal with the HDNet Fights broadcast network.
• ECW General manager Theodore Long announced on the January 27 episode of ECW on Sci Fi that Matt Hardy had been released from his ECW contract and had signed with the SmackDown brand.
• On the January 29 episode of Impact!, Kevin Nash made his TNA television return after being sidelined with a Staph infection.
• After debating over a competitive role, it was announced on January 31 by WWE that Mickey Rourke, the star of The Wrestler, would appear at WrestleMania XXV as a guest and not as a competitor.

• It was announced by Ring of Honor (ROH) that they would tape their first episode of ROH for HDNet on February 28 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvannia.
• Former professional wrestler and football player Jim Wilson died at the age of 67 after a lengthy battle with cancer.

• On the February 6 episode of Friday Night SmackDown, Eve Torres made her World Wrestling Entertainment (WWE) in-ring television debut in singles competition in a losing effort to Michelle McCool.
• On February 7:

• D'Lo Brown made his debut with ROH at a live event.
• Chris Jericho was involved in an altercation with a fan while leaving a live event in Victoria, British Columbia.
• At a live event in Naguabo, Puerto Rico, Steve Corino won the WWC Universal Heavyweight Championship.

• WWE announced the naming of a new Executive Vice President in Marketing, Michelle D. Wilson.

• Triple H won his record eighth WWE Championship by winning the SmackDown Elimination Chamber match; this win surpassed The Rock's original record of seven reigns.
• Edge won the World Heavyweight Championship by winning the Raw Elimination Chamber match.

• It was announced on the February 16 episode of Raw that Terry and Dory Funk, Jr. will be the second and third inductees, into the WWE Hall of Fame as a part of the Class of 2009; they will be inducted by Dusty Rhodes.
• World Wrestling Entertainment (WWE) announced on February 19 that their February 16 broadcast of Raw had gained a 4.1 television rating, the largest since the February 26, 2007 episode of Raw.
• On February 20:

• HDNet announced that episode airings of Ring of Honor would begin on March 31.
• It was reported by a Nielsen Media Research ratings report that the February 19 broadcast of TNA's Impact earned a 1.3 television rating, the highest rounded number the promotion has ever drawn.
• WWE announced the release of Scotty Goldman from the company.
• On an episode of Friday Night SmackDown, WWE announced the return of Gail Kim to the promotion via a video promo.

• It was reported on February 21 that Sonjay Dutt had been released from his TNA contract, and this was confirmed with the removal of his profile from TNA's official website.
• On February 20, it was reported that Freddie Prinze, Jr., a scriptwriter for Friday Night SmackDown, had been released from his contract with WWE.
• On February 23:

• Afa Anoa'i, Jr., known by his ring name "Manu", was released from his WWE contract.
• On Raw, it was announced that Ricky Steamboat will be the fourth inductee into the WWE Hall of Fame as a part of the Class of 2009; he will be inducted by Ric Flair.

• WWE confirmed on February 24 that WrestleMania XXVI would be held in Glendale, Arizona at the University of Phoenix Stadium on March 28, 2010.
• On February 25, WWE announced that they had discontinued the WWE One Night Stand name, and that their 2009 event would be replaced with the name 'Extreme Rules'.
• ROH taped the first episode airings of their television series for HDNet on February 28 from the The Arena.
