The ancient Umayyad site of Qasr al-Hayr al-Sharqi is located roughly 70 km noretheast of the ancient city of Palmyra in central Syria.
Site Description
This Umayyad castle was constructed at the behest of caliph Hisham in 728-729 AD to be used as a military and hunting outpost. The palace consists of a large open courtyard surrounded by thick bulwarks and towers guarding the entrances as well as each corner.
The palace is the counterpart of Qasr al-Hayr al-Gharbi, another nearby castle palace but one year earlier.
World Heritage Status
This site was added to the UNESCO World Heritage Tentative List on June 8th, 1999 in the Cultural category.
