Corrosion of Conformity started as a hardcore punk band in the 1980s in Raleigh, North Carolina (later moving to Houston, Texas). Corrosion of Conformity were pioneers of the Punk Metal genre in the 1980's, however, they eventually gravitated towards a more straight-forward Heavy Metal sound. By the mid-1990s they had become a Heavy Metal band. This led to more mainstream acceptance, gained particularly through their big break, opening for Metallica. In recent years, COC now exhibit a sound which leans towards stoner rock though still keeping their southern metal sound.
