Main article: United States presidential election, 2008

The United States presidential election in Virginia took place on November 4, 2008. Democrat Barack Obama defeated Republican John McCain in the state by 6.30% and a margin of 234,527 votes. Along with Indiana, Virginia voted for the Democratic nominee for the first time since 1964.

Virginia had been targeted early by the Obama campaign, largely due to strong Democratic gains in past years. The Democrats had won two gubernatorial races in a row, and had also regained control of the Senate of Virginia.

Early returns showed McCain ahead. However, Obama swamped McCain by scoring a near-sweep in Northern Virginia, the backbone of recent Democratic success in the state. The last time Virginia went Republican was for President George W. Bush of Texas and Vice President Dick Cheney of Wyoming in 2004.
