Digital audio support

Misplaced Pages uses the Ogg Vorbis, FLAC and WAV formats for audio, as they are not encumbered by patents (an issue that prompted the decision that MP3 files will not be hosted at Misplaced Pages). Software supporting Vorbis exists for many platforms...

Mozilla Firefox 4, Opera 10.5 and Google Chrome 3 (and later versions) each include their own support for Ogg Vorbis files.

As for multimedia players, Winamp can be used to play Ogg Vorbis files. Although iTunes does not natively support Vorbis, Xiph.Org provides a QuickTime component which can be used in players that rely on QuickTime, such as iTunes, on both Microsoft Windows and Mac OS. DirectShow filters exist to decode Vorbis in multimedia players like Windows Media Player and others which support DirectShow.

Various online tools (such as Zamzar) are available which let you freely convert one file format into another, and can be useful when you want to upload a file to Misplaced Pages.

Thanks for your feedback re: the conflict of interest guidelines. I appreciate the concern. In this case, I don't have any relationship whatsoever to the show, its producers, the parent company, its host, the industry or even podcasting in general. Any help on making the page better would be appreciated. Thanks again. Jliverse (talk) 12:47, 22 February 2009 (UTC)

Resolution check?

in re: image deletion

Hi. You just deleted File:ChicagoSpire 05 25 08.jpg, which I was just checking before deleting. That's fine - but the version on Commons is lower resolution than the one that was here. Please could you check that the resolutions are the same before deleting images? Thanks. Mike Peel (talk) 22:45, 28 February 2009 (UTC)

Thanks for letting me know. I went to restore it after your message and found that you restored it long enough to upload the higher resolution image to Commons. Well done! — Athaenara 23:00, 28 February 2009 (UTC)

Shozam page deletion

in re: deleted article

Dear Athaenara,

Our Shozam Wiki page was deleted for "blatant advertising." However, we included credible, third-party sources in our article. Additionally, other software program similar to Shozam have not been deleted, including:

http://en.wikipedia.org/Photoshop http://en.wikipedia.org/ACDSee http://en.wikipedia.org/Jalbum

Please advise as to why our page was deleted when we followed the reference guidelines, and other software programs are allowed, but not ours. Please consider relisting our Shozam article.

in re: deleted article

Hi - I originally put all the tags and then only later the csd when i realised that the links at the base of the article had nothing to do with the group. We often have fly by edits of articles that come in english (usually very poor) or even Indonesian into the Indonesian project - and never hear from the editors again - it can be very frustrating at times as either their english is so poor that they do not understand either the notices or what is happening. Apologies for having muddied things by the tags and then the csd - probably should have left it with just one or the other - there are easily 100 articles in the indonesian project with similar issues - slowly trying to resolve them SatuSuro 01:08, 12 March 2009 (UTC) Just saw your delete - oh well another issue solved - but there are always more in the wings :( SatuSuro 01:10, 12 March 2009 (UTC)

Could you pleaseItalic text explain how my article on Florcello submitted 03/16/09 is considered "blatent advertising"? How could it possibly be written in a more unbiased fashion ? I want to learn. Please take a look a the articles for Tuaca, Liquor Fogg, Sabra... Yes but i don’t see where the issue lies... If it was a typo then my bad... I was enthusiasm in redoing the wiki and getting it solid for a return. If my page is informative, contains what is needed as in references and link per last creation & is not a conflict of interest just a typo then why was it removed? It has every right to be there since it is a legit valid sport in Manchester nh. And I ask you if you check out New Hampshire Roller Derby who are the Nashua team for comparison, they have less info and there wiki has less info and there wiki needs work they won’t thru the same issue with wiki admin’s and they got it up why not us? Why not remove them? In fact if you look at any derby wiki you'll see the same amount of information is posted on any page and there all fine. Were all teams we all play roller derby and we all want people to know about us and on wiki. Were a part of NH were a part of Manchester & I’m requesting that it be reverted back to what it was. If not i want to know exactly on the page what is wrong and where so it can be fixed. Thanks for your time Team1up (talk) 18:10, 25 March 2009 (UTC)

Editing Michael Covel

in re: DuvWork (talk · contribs · deleted contribs · logs · filter log · block user · block log)

I have made changes to Michael Covel in order to better fit the guidelines set forth by Misplaced Pages. It is not my intent to create useless pages on Misplaced Pages. I am new to Misplaced Pages and just learning they correct style of writing for this Encyclopedia.

The other pages referencing Michael W. Covel and Michael W Covel where supposed to be tests on Sandbox and not published. I still do not know how to delete articles (can you?) that you did not intend to show on Misplaced Pages. I think the Michael Covel article (only the one Michael Covel article) is relevant and would serve the Misplaced Pages Community as a reference/resource for economic perspective. Any advice on how to make the article as neutral as possible would be greatly appreciated. I also want to be clear that I do not have a close connection to Michael Covel or any of his associates/affiliates. I found the content I read in is books relevant enough to share with others. Thank you! DuvWork (talk) 04:33, 26 March 2009 (UTC)

Faulty Commons image transfer + deletion

in re: {{db-f8}} requests (local log)

Hello,

I recently tried to migrate seven images to Commons, but the CommonsHelper transfer did not work correctly. I believe there were two images which had multiple versions in their history, but in all cases, only the most recent version was actually migrated.

I was in the process of seeking support when you deleted one of the images in question: File:1882 Cornell University faculty.jpg

As I understand it, part of the deletion process is that the deleter is obligated to manually confirm that all data (including past versions of the image) have been transferred properly, so I was not expecting this to be an issue, or else I would have reverted the changes the script made to the Misplaced Pages version of the image page.

Can the Misplaced Pages version of the image page be restored?

Best, Notyourbroom (talk) 14:13, 26 March 2009 (UTC)

There were two relevant images deleted; one was deleted by you and the other by a different editor. That other editor did not at first understand what the problem was when I contacted him about it. Please forgive me if this is information you know already, but just to be sure we are on the same page, I will paste my explanation from the other conversation below. --Notyourbroom (talk) 15:25, 26 March 2009 (UTC)
"Please review this page, particularly items 8 and 9. Transferring the full image history is usually legally required by the most-used image licenses, and it's my understanding that transferring the full image history is considered "best practice" even when not a legal obligation." --Notyourbroom (talk) 15:25, 26 March 2009 (UTC)

YTB

see also: Misplaced Pages:Conflict of interest/Noticeboard/Archive 31#YourTravelBiz.com and user Copstead

Hello, I see that you once again deleted all the changes I made for YTB. Please do not delete since this is the correct information about the company.

1) The company is YTB not YourTravelBiz. The offical name of the company is YTB International, Inc.

2) The information that has been added to the page is negative attack information that has been added by YTB's competitors.

How can we display correct information if it is always deleted. Please help me since I want to have the correct information up there.

Thank you,

What has happened to my categories and edit history?

in re: {{db-f8}}, images uploaded by Pdfpdf, moved to commons and tagged {{NowCommons}} by GerardusS

It seems that somebody has uploaded a lot of my pictures to commons, and you have deleted the originals.
Because you have deleted the originals, the edit history has gone, so I can't find out what happened.
Further, I can't find out what was on the original pages.
But the most annoying thing is that ALL the categories have been removed, so I no longer can find my pictures!! And if/when I do, I'm going to have to manually add all the categories back in.
This sucks.
Who decides that a picture should be moved/copied to commons?
Why can it be moved without me being notified?
How can it be "F8" without me being informed and given the opportunity to say "hangon"?
Why is the category information destroyed?
And none of it is your fault - you just happen to be the only person who has left any traceable evidence! You have to laugh, don't you. I'm looking forward to you waving your magic wand and solving all these issues. (I mean, all admins have magic wands, don't they?) Failing that, I'm looking forward to your reply. Cheers, Pdfpdf (talk) 13:21, 5 April 2009 (UTC)

This is why I format deletion summaries as I do: I don't want the original page creators to be left with no clue about what happened to their work and why. GFDL (that "irrevocably agree to release" stuff) applies here, but notification (and a magic wand ;-) would be cool. As far as I can see, the categories are visible in the upload summaries on the commons pages.
(Special:DeletedContributions/Pdfpdf is an additional record of upload summaries and other edits.)
I don't have answers to all of your questions, but Template talk:Db-meta and the administrators' noticeboard might be good places to raise the issues of procedure and consideration for uploaders who are not expecting deletion and are blindsided by the event. — Athaenara 01:40, 6 April 2009 (UTC)
Thanks! All sorts of interesting & useful stuff!! (BTW: Clicking on Special:DeletedContributions/Pdfpdf results in "The action you have requested is limited to Administrators." for mere mortals like me.) Cheers, Pdfpdf (talk) 14:46, 6 April 2009 (UTC) (Gee, that's really bad news about the magic wand ... )
galleries
I think it's a good idea for uploaders to put an image {{gallery}} on their user page or a subpage (e.g. User:Pdfpdf/Gallery in this case). What do you think? — Athaenara 00:21, 7 April 2009 (UTC)
As I did just that in December last year, I guess I must think it's a good idea! (User:Pdfpdf/Galleries)
(I also guess that it would be a good idea if I kept it up to date ... )
One thought: Stuff that is only licensed to appear on one specific page (e.g. images of album covers) could not also appear in the gallery.
Cheers, Pdfpdf (talk) 13:36, 7 April 2009 (UTC)
On the other hand, we have "special" commands like this one.
However, galleries do have the advantage that you can annotate the gallery entries. It looks like there are pros and cons all over the place, and that's just from two of the possiblilities. Cheers, Pdfpdf (talk) 13:52, 7 April 2009 (UTC)

Misplaced Pages:Best practices for editors with conflicts of interest says

Don't create new articles
Don't create any new articles (or recreate any deleted articles) on any subject related to your conflict of interest. Similarly, don't create articles that discuss a company or group you are affiliated with. If no article exists and you believe one should, you can make a request for someone else to post one at Misplaced Pages:Requested articles.
