Pauline Fowler is a fictional character in the popular BBC soap opera EastEnders.

She is the daughter of Lou Beale and the matriarch of the Fowler family. She has been played by Wendy Richard since the show started in 1985, one of only two characters to have remained in the show from the beginning, the other being her nephew, Ian Beale, played by Adam Woodyatt. She has a fondness for cardigans and an unshakable faith in the curative properties of a nice cup of tea.

She likes to think herself as a family woman and she often refers to the importance of family 'back in the day'. However, it could be argued she is more to blame for driving her family away: her constant nagging drove her husband Arthur to despair and adultery; she harassed daughter, Michelle, who then left for America with her daughter Vicki. Even now she continues to interfere with the personal life of son, Martin, and daughter-in-law, Sonia. However she has the upmost respect for her late mother, Lou, and she took the 'role' of matriarch after her death, and has brought her children up like her mother.

She can be a stubborn and strong-willed character and makes her opinion known. Her arch-enemy was Den Watts, who she never forgave for making Michelle pregnant at just 16, while he was a much older, married womaniser. She would constantly dig at him, and ironically, it was her iron doorstop (in the shape of a dog) that killed him.

Throughout her time she has remained good friends with Dot Branning and often makes reference to her Arthur who died in 1996: "Well I know what my Arthur would say about this". The statements that follow are often wildly at variance with Arthur's retiring personality as seen on screen.

In the mid/late 1990s, Pauline discovered that she had a sister, Maggie Flaherty, who was conceived before her parents married, and thus forced to be given up for adoption to a strict Irish family. Pauline travelled to their home, and Maggie's husband made a drunken, rejected pass at her. Pauline ended up going back home with her nephew, Connor, and his daughter, Mary, in tow.
