Shukria Barakzai was born in 1972 in Kabul, Afghanistan. She is the founder of Aina-E-Zan (Women’s Mirror), a weekly newspaper based in Kabul launched in 2002. Her mission was to "improve the understanding and knowledge of Afghan women in society”. Barakzai went to Kabul University in the 1990s. Half way between finishing geology, she had to break off her studies because of mounting violence between government and Mujahideen. She resumed her education in the geology faculty at Kabul University, right after the Taliban were driven out of Kabul in late 2001. In the October 2004 Afghan elections she was elected to be among 71 Afghan MPs. In 2004 Barakzai was presented by Worldpress.org as International Editor of the Year. In December of 2005 Shukria Barakzai was named Woman of the Year by the BBC Radio 4 programme Woman's Hour. She can speak in Pashto, Dari and English.
