Wikidebate

Hi! I notice youve put up an article called wikidebate. Its prefered not to have this sort of page in the main namespace: perhaps you could move it to one of your subpages (User Wonderfool/wikidebate for example) and ask an admin to remove the original by putting a speedy delete tag ({{delete}}) on it? I'd never thought about that (and I'd be interested to see what the director has to say on the DVD) - because they were flying at the time that Donnie went back in time, and they did receive that turbulence. I think the way I interpreted the turbulence was that it was a result of the time travel, but I think I'll have to rewatch the film now. As far as I understood, neither of the engines appeared to have come from a particular plane, because the of the FAA's inability to find where it come from when it fell the first time. Wha? I'm not busy with arbitration work (yet). I'm only an arbitrator-elect - I don't actually begin my term until January 1. But anyway, I was discussing what you said with my brother (who's also a fan who's seen it countless times), and both of us came to the agreement that you're probably right. French exploding whale

Pitcairn Island

No, I haven't had the chance to visit Pitcairn, but if I ever get the opportunity I won't be turning it down. It's such a fascinating little place. I have visited Norfolk Island, many of whose inhabitants are of Pitcairnese descent, hence my interest.

Actually, I've expanded on it and added it back in to the current edition. I do appreciate the contribution, although we've tried to get articles a little more polished before they actually get posted on the Signpost page itself. If you want to add anything in the future, feel free to let me know; what we usually do is work on drafts of articles using subpages in our user space, get them ready for "publication", and then move them into the Misplaced Pages namespace on Monday when they get published. It's an attempt to balance the collaborative editing process with the need to generate a reasonably "finished" product, which works a little differently for news than it does for the encyclopedia. --Michael Snow 18:03, 21 Mar 2005 (UTC)

Requesting help from Onefool

I only became aware of you through one of your parent's bold addition to The Signpost. Anyway, I noted the interest in Welsh culture and thought that your heredity may be of some help with this can of worms that I unintentially opened. It started when I looked into a new article about a Welsh cheese, Yfeni, by an anon. After some checking I felt that the article was genuine but that the name was misspelled so I moved it to Y-fenni and stubbed it. When I researched further (I know, I shouldn't have) I came to realize that the cheese Y-fenni was named for the market town Y Fenni which is the Welsh name for Abergavenny, a municipal borough in Monmouthshire, in Wales. Looking a little further I realized that this was in way above my pay-grade here what with all the inconsistent spellings I found for the town and the cheese (Y Fenni.Y-Fenni, Y fenni, Y-fenni). We certainly need a dis-ambig page but I don't feel adequate to the task. If you are interested, it should cover the town vs the cheese vs the variety of spellings for both. Hi Wonderfool, I have a query about User:Onefool, which appears to be a public user account with the password declared on your user page. Are you aware that this is against policy? Hi Wonderfool, thanks for the explanation. I saw it hadn't been used for a while, but some of the recent posts made me think it was about to start up again. It would probably be a good idea to delete that password from your user page, in case it's changed back again. Accounts where the password is posted are to be blocked on sight, because they mean users can edit without any way of tracing who's doing what, and can create the impression of, as you said, a "super user." Hi! I noticed Ayinyud's alternative proposal on the discussion page -- and well, I ran with it. Be Bold! So please drop over and look at the messes I've made. Below is my initial note on the discussion page.

"I'll join in, but I think we all have to take some initiative to get this off the ground. The time constraints may be the main difficulty. After all, everyone here does have a real life, don't they? What if we took the info above, claimed a chapter, wrote from one of the listed characters or additional character's POV (I'll be Ethelynn, the new upstairs maid - Chapter 7, User:WBardwin/Chapter.), and then put it together and edit jointly for content and flow? Each character would tell about events before, the murder, and events after from their POV, then we would have different snapshots to work from. We could then jointly write the revelation of the murderer and the conclusion. Having the first chapter to work from would be important, however. How goes it. Gkhan?"

Cheap air travel to Sweden

Hi! I've posted a more elaborate answer to your Reference Desk question about cheap air travel to Sweden. I figured I should copy it here so you don't miss it. (Hope you haven't booked your tickets yet...) Anyway, if there is anything more you need to know about travel and tourism in Sweden, don't hesitate to ask me. Alarm 00:24, 25 July 2005 (UTC)

As with all air travel, the best way is to shop around, as the pricing depends on the specific dates and times you're going to travel. Also, it depends on where in Sweden you'll be going. If you're flexible, RyanAir is generally the cheapest way, but if you're going to Stockholm, bear in mind that RyanAir operates Skavsta Airport, which is outside Nyköping, some 100 km south of Stockholm. A round trip airport coach ticket is SEK 199 (close to GBP 15 and the ride takes approx 80 minutes. RyanAir also operates a Stansted-Gothenburg line. If your trip is not imminent, you might want to check out FlyMe, a company that will start to operate a Gatwick-Stockholm line (to Stockholm-Arlanda Airport) October 3. If you're going to the south of Sweden, the most convenient, as well as the cheapest, option might be to fly to Kastrup Airport, Copenhagen, and catch a train across the Oresund Bridge to Malmö - and possibly further. This will add two more low-price flight operators, EasyJet and Maersk Air, to your options. As for the "classic" airlines, SAS Scandinavian and British Airways have direct flights from London to Stockholm. British Airways sometimes have really good offers, SAS more seldom so.

If you live close to one of the south UK airports with international connections, and don't want to take the train to London, an alternative might be to fly to Brussels, from where low-price flights with Malmö Aviation and SN Brussels Airlines can be found. From Amsterdam you'll have Sterling and Transavia flying to Stockholm. However, I very much doubt that these options will be cheaper in total for you.

Rather than swimming, an alternative to air travel might be to take the ferry, but there is no direct connection from the south coast of UK to Sweden, so you would have to go to Newcastle to catch the DFDS ferry to Gothenburg. Yeah, I got a year abroad. I was staying in an IEP, a very well reputed school. Living in a different country is always good, no matter what it is. And it was great, you know, to be part of and come to terms with a new culture. However, you won't get an Erasmus grant, but I believe there's a similar grant that N Americans get-at least the ones in my university. You should check that out. So if u language interests you, and ur not too fussed about leaving your own country, then its probably worth it. See the world! And while ur in France, there's a gateway to Europe - it doesnt cost much to travel round Europe these days (no-frills is the way forward). Hey, maybe i can house you in the UK) WF

I've never been to Europe before, so I would love to go. How easy did you find it to understand people when they were speaking? I'm alright with written french, but I find that most french people talk too quickly for me to understand :( At least on TV anyway. XD

Well, I'd seen a fair bit of French films and even tuned in to French radio sometimes (we can pick some up on medium wave in UK. At first people had to talk a bit slower to me at first, but after a while there was no problem - I could understand just about everything said on the radio, but when there were biggish groups of French people around and me the only foreigner, it was pretty tough, what with them verlanising, abbreviating and speaking in wordy idiomatic slang. But hey, if ur in a university then you'll most likely be intergrating with other foreigners who have French as their 2eme langue. If you're going to be an assistant in a school, it'll be tougher. In (most) unis in UK, u get a choice of studying in a uni or being an English teaching assistant in schools.

And try listening to French rap - I can't make that out still - think Snoop Doggizzle but in French. WF

Antarctica

I just did the Edward VII Peninsula article, as part of the Encarta project. All the info there I gathered from my trusty National Geographic Atlas of the World. I redlinked Okuma Bay and Sulzberger Bay, as well as the Saunders Coast.

I notice the Category Antarctica is filling up, but all the subcats seem to pretty much be dupes of each other. Maybe some sort of restructuring is in order before it gets too much out of hand. There are lots of hopelessly obscure stubby articles that can be written about Antarctica, and I'm thinking the stub category needs to be looked at: there is not much that can be said about these places, and in fact, all that can be said is usally said.

I'll probably do ones about the Beethoven Peninsula and the Mendelssohn, Brahms and Verdi Inlets, and X-ref the appropriate articles, unless someone beats me to it. --FourthAve 07:55, 28 August 2005 (UTC)

clip clop

You know when people ask you to an impression of a horse walking, and you make a "clip clop" sound with the tongue. Well, how do u write that sound in IPA? It's for a weird short novel that I'm writing - and this in needed in a scene, without it the scene would be a lot less funny. --Wonderfool t(c) 00:05, 22 August 2005 (UTC)

The sounds in question are click consonants. I believe the sound used for "clip clop" is the postalveolar click, whose symbol is the exclamation point (!). By convention, the symbol for a plain voiceless click is accompanied by when the closure is velar (which it is in this case), so the symbol for the "clip" is . The lower-pitched click for "clop" has lip rounding, so its symbol is . "Clip-clop, clip-clop" is thus rendered in IPA. --Angr/_{tɔk tə mi} 22:35, 1 September 2005 (UTC)

I just came here to reply to Wonderfool and noticed this. I'd like to thank you, Wonderfool, for the nomination -- it's certainly an honour to be asked. However, my view at present is that I have not been around in the Wiki community for long enough yet to be able to meet people's expectations of a WP admin, and that my my RfA would not have a good chance of success. For the time being, I'm more than content to remain as an contributor, particularly in the Missing Articles, Wikification and other such projects. These nihilartikels have begun to appear less bogus, as they have been "wikified" by some other users (including a sysop). Wonderfool, there are quite a few admins who want to ban you outright for disruption now. Some of us have argued against this, but you need to help us. Please go through all your articles (use the contrubutions list) indentify any and all that are not genuine and mark them with {{db|creator admits hoax}} or something simmilar. When you have done that (and are sure you haven't forgotten any) post a note here (or on the section about you on WP:AN), stating that they are all tagged as delete, and making very clear that you understand that you must not insert hoax material into wikipedia. This has been good, it gave me an oppurtunity to look through my old edits, expurgating the crappy ones and laughing about how quickly bad edits get removed. I estimate that maybe 1 in 150 of my edits are what would be considered non-desirable. However, I've made scores of new pages, I'm quite surprised by that. Yeah, sorry about nihilartikels again -WF. Pedia has been fun. And I'd like to think that I've done my little bit to divide opinions in the upper echelons of the Misplaced Pages hierarchy. P.s. while you're looking out for my nihilartikels in Pedia, there's tonnes more in Wiktionary. Its easier to make a word sound plausible than an article, just by saying its in a random language - my favourites were Breton "words". Whatmore, there's a great deal of dodgy translations too. But recently, due to SemperBlotto being around all the time, these have been expurgated. It is the best translation I can do, but is it english? There is no mension of walking, or pacing up and down in a coffin, just advancing... Well, no. I do have some words of my own. I'm enjoying myself tremendously here. I do a lot of reading about subjects with which I am familiar which leads me to an astounding number of places with which I am totally unfamiliar. Who fancies making a page called Misplaced Pages:Nihilartikels? I suggest it should read something like:

Often, encyclopedias insert nihilartikels into them. This has been going on for a while. Many pages are added to Misplaced Pages and subsequently deleted. However, some articles seem reasonable, and are failed to be caught.

How to write a believable Nihilartikel

Firstly, make sure the title of the article has something that would pass the Google test. So by choosing a set of words that don't mean anything by themselves, say "cheesed off", which gets lots of Google hits. Make this be the name of "a band", cos bands have strange names like that. What Wonderfool suggests is to not tag the entry or give it a category, so that later on, other editors will tag it, wikify it, or put a {stub} tag on it. An article with more editors is more believable than an article with just one editor.
