Suspicious bettings issue
According to The Independent on this year's tournament starting on Monday 22 June the Tennis Integrity Unit (TIU) is trying to prevent match-fixing by observing the matches of 6 but more likely 12 players (some of inside the ATP top 50), because the investigation of the forementioned newspaper came up with the result that several players are under suspicion of bribery and the manipulation of the outcome of their matches. Among them are of various nationalities like Russians, Argentines, Spaniards and Italians. Those who came into the scope of the TIU are in the first place players whose games had recently been betted with conspicuously big amount of credit.
According to ATP they have already identified those Russian and Italian mafia-related groups, which are behind the mostly online bettings, and the players who are inclined "to sell" their matches. The organizers of Wimbledon Championship declared that there are no proceedings against any players but TIU chairman Jeff Rees said they had already arrested several bettors, but no other detail will be revealed about the investigation, which covers 45 tennis matches.
The dubious matches involve those of Daniel Koellerer and Óscar Hernández in the 2009 Ordina Open first round where a Russian spectator placed an unusually big bet using a notebook on the latter winner. The same situation went on the first round bout of wildcard entry Monégasque Jean-René Lisnard and the Belgian Christophe Rochus on the 2009 Monte Carlo Masters. Nikolay Davydenko might also be on the list because of his 2007 scandal where the number-four seed suddenly retired by injury against Martin Vassallo Arguello in Sopot, Poland while online gambling site Betfair received enormous sums from Russia to the favor of the latter who was ranked 87th at the time. The recently rehabilitated Filippo Volandri could also be the subject of monitoring.
Italian mafiaboss Michael Franzese revealed in exchange of a plea bargain the process of getting someone ensnared in match-fixing. They usually check tennis players regarding their gambling habits or if they had a divorce in the near past, which cost them most of their earnings. When the sportsmen outran their financial limits they offer a loan to help them and when this dept becomes unpayable the player can easily be forced to fix a match of theirs.
