In the article ] reference 2 is just "UNESCO. May 12, 1989". Is this a legitimate reference? It doesn't identify a specific document. |

Suppression without explanations of 8000 bytes from "Quinceañera film"
Hello, can you tell me if this massive suppression by "Shiver of recognition" (red link) is normal ? I think I know and love latino culture, and cannot be thought intolerant, since I have several gay people among my friends. I am perplexed. Thanks for your answer.Arapaima (talk) 08:17, 18 August 2009 (UTC)
- Apparently you are referring to this edit. That was not clear from your post. —teb728 t c 08:23, 18 August 2009 (UTC)
- As a first step, may I suggest that you leave a message at Shiver of recognition's discussion page and ask them why they removed it? looking at it, it certainly looks as if they changed the previous version's text with no good reason (not helped by no edit summary), but as I know nothing of this film, I cannot say more myself. I do know that as well as having no edit summary, Shiver of recognition didn't say anything on the film's discussion page. -- PhantomSteve (Contact Me, My Contribs) 08:45, 18 August 2009 (UTC)
- That's a pretty detailed summary. I'd say a shorter version would suffice. hmwitht 14:13, 18 August 2009 (UTC)
- Thanks a lot for your answers. After some pondering, I didn't try to write on "Shiver..."'s inexistant discussion page, but restored the erased text under a new chapter-heading : "Detailed analysis of the plot" , with a 2 lines warning that this chapter is for people who want to know more about the film. Hope it will placate the eraser. Best regards Arapaima (talk) 17:19, 19 August 2009 (UTC)
Search for not so new article
Usually, when I create a new article, it shows up in the search box within a few hours. I usually create a new article in a sandbox, then after I can find it in search, I remove the redirect from my sandbox to the article. This time, I created a new article on the 15th. The article, USA Women's Pan American Team, clearly exists, and if you enter the complete name into the search box, it will inform you that such a page exists. But if you enter any part of a a reasonable search, say "USA Womens Pan" or even "USA Women's Pan American", the search feature will not find the article. Am I doing something wrong?--SPhilbrickT 11:50, 18 August 2009 (UTC)
- My tests indicate the search index has not been updated since August 8. For example, this Sandbox search currently reports a result from this August 8 version of the Sandbox. PrimeHunter (talk) 12:24, 18 August 2009 (UTC)

Access a specific deleted revision given its oldid
As the subject says, is it possible to retrieve a deleted revision directly if you have the old rev_id (typically in the form of a permalink)? Thanks, decltype (talk) 12:17, 18 August 2009 (UTC)
- Apparently not. I just went to CAT:CSD found a blatant copyvio to delete, copied the URL to its permanent oldid, and then I deleted it. When I thereafter tried to access the permanent link I got "The requested page or revision cannot be found" ... This error is usually caused by following an outdated diff or history link where the content has been removed by an administrator or another user with similar access....--Fuhghettaboutit (talk) 12:26, 18 August 2009 (UTC)
- Just to clarify for others, only admins can see deleted versions and they have another url system with a timestamp instead of an id number. I don't know a direct method but I know a slow indirect method. Increase or decrease the id number by one until you find any page version which has not been deleted. Don't care about the page name (and you don't have to remove it from the url). This will give you the time of the deleted version, usually within the same minute. Then look for that time in the deleted page history. If there were multiple edits to the deleted page that minute then I'm not sure how to find the right one. Infobox or Table
How do I make an infobox or table? —Preceding unsigned comment added by Sfranklinh (talk • contribs) 16:30, 18 August 2009 (UTC)
- See Help:Table (or there's an "insert a table" button in the editing window right above the text box.
- You can add an infobox by transcluding it. You place {{infobox person}}, or whatever is the title, at the top of the page. You can see all infoboxes at Category:Infobox templates. hmwitht 16:51, 18 August 2009 (UTC)
Arbitration policy
Good afternoon, I apologise for bad English, I used the autotranslator
You could not give the exact and detailed answer. According to the information here Arbitration policy has been the jurisdiction of Jimbo Wales and the Arbitration Committee.
- Question №1: It is actual, whether so it?
- Question №2: whether it Extends on other language sections, in particular on the Russian?
- Question №3: Russian analogue of arbitration committee is completely self-sufficient, or is obliged to take in attention principles of English-speaking arbitration committee?
Thanks. SergeyJ (talk) 16:59, 18 August 2009 (UTC)
In what place it is possible correctly and to ask these questions officially? SergeyJ (talk) 17:09, 18 August 2009 (UTC)
- I can try and give some answers (I'm one of the arbitrators on the English Misplaced Pages). Despite that, this is not an official answer, but it might be the best you get (sorry if my English is too colloquial to be easily understood). Here are my answers to your questions:
- (1) I don't understand the question.
- (2) The jurisdiction of the English language Misplaced Pages Arbitration Committee does not (by definition) extend to other language Wikipedias, and hence does not extend to the Russian language Misplaced Pages.
- (3) Other language Misplaced Pages arbitration committees (including the Russian one, if it exists) are independent and follow their own rules and policies. They are free to follow and borrow ideas from elsewhere, but are not obliged to do so.
- If anyone reading this knows more about how arbitration works on other projects, please add more to this answer. A good way to find other language Wikipedias is to look at the interwiki links at WP:ARBCOM, and also to look at the list on meta of other arbitration committees. See meta:Arbitration Committee and meta:Wikimedia Arbitration committees election processes and meta:Global arbitration committee. Those last two links aren't really needed, but I thought they looked interesting. Carcharoth (talk) 22:05, 18 August 2009 (UTC)
- The Russian language Misplaced Pages has an dispute resolution system in place, up to and including RFAR. SergeyJ is currently involved in one RFAR which has been accepted, and another which has been recently rejected. -- Александр Дмитрий (Alexandr Dmitri) (talk) 23:45, 18 August 2009 (UTC)
Searching user contributions
I've always wanted to be able to search things like the following, mainly in my own user contributions:
- Any text added by me in any talk page that contains a certain word.
- An edit (by me) on any project talk page that was a reply to a certain user, or at least in the vicinity of that user's signature.
- An edit that inserted a certain template (possibly with "subst:").
- Search a range of dates.
Until now, I just assumed that wasn't possible, but then I realized that we have Misplaced Pages:Tags, and the filters have very complex conditions. So at least we have a technical solution to do such things in bulk, and my question may boil down to whether it is possible to do the same thing (or simpler things) individually. — Sebastian 17:29, 18 August 2009 (UTC)
- One rather brute-force way to accomplish all the searches you want would be to export all your edits to a plain text file, which you could then search with a standalone tool such as grep or with the search function of any text editor. However, I don't know offhand of a way to export all your edits to a text file. There are some desktop search programs which can search various kinds of personally relevant information such as your e-mail, chat logs, Web pages you have viewed, your local files, etc., but I have not heard of one that would be Misplaced Pages-aware. It sounds like you want something like a keylogger program which understands wikitext markup and stores a copy of everything you edit on Misplaced Pages, making it usefully searchable. In the meantime you might look at WP:EIW#Download, WP:EIW#Research, WP:EIW#Query, and WP:EIW#Search to see what other people are doing. Similar requirements for complex queries on Misplaced Pages's database come up in the domains of vandal fighting and research on Misplaced Pages. I'm sure somebody knows how to do the types of searches you want to do, but they might require something like setting up your own personal mirror of Misplaced Pages so you can run arbitrarily complex SQL queries. Unless you can find a suitable online tool somebody may have set up to allow you to run your own queries (such as maybe mw:API:Query). --Teratornis (talk) 19:29, 18 August 2009 (UTC)
- Thank you for the links, I will have to look at those. I'm astonished that you don't see a connection between what I want and the existing filters. Even creating a new filter for each new query (there'd be about one per week) seems less work to me than mirroring all the talk pages and their history, or even all of Misplaced Pages. Am I misunderstanding how filters work? — Sebastian 19:38, 18 August 2009 (UTC)
- I don't know anything about edit filters, certainly not enough to see how to use them to run arbitrary queries on the Misplaced Pages database. If nobody else chimes in with anything useful, you might try asking on WP:VPT or perhaps on Misplaced Pages talk:Edit filter. I'm only (somewhat) familiar with the methods other people have described to do these kinds of complex searches. That doesn't rule out the use of new tools. The Help desk gets questions about how to do complex searches from time to time, and our answers are never very good as far as I have seen, suggesting that the Help desk is not the best place to ask these kinds of questions. I am the first to agree that Misplaced Pages's immediately apparent search features are woefully inadequate for editors. They seem more aimed at people who merely read articles and want to look something up, and then from only the current revisions of articles. Histories are considerably harder to search. --Teratornis (talk) 20:04, 18 August 2009 (UTC)

- In short, yes, you are. Those tags are for the edit filter, which is a way to screen specific kinds of edits, especially those likely to be vandalism, such as blanking or repeated characters. They are not for individual users' desires, which is why the edit filter permission is highly limited. ~ Amory (user • talk • contribs) 19:59, 18 August 2009 (UTC)
- That part I understand - they have a different purpose. My question, however, was technical: If we can use complex search for purpose A, it stands to reason that there might be a way to use it for purpose B, as well. Or can it be that the problem is not technical, but rather intentional: Are there concerns, such as privacy, if people can use complex search for their own purpose?
- As Teratornis suggested, I probably should move this question to a different location; I may do so depending on what I'll find out in the links the big helpful bird provided. — Sebastian 21:55, 18 August 2009 (UTC)
- I'd suspect the lack of potentially useful features has more to do with the lack of sufficient developers to develop them rather than any conscious plan not to develop them. The list of requested features for Misplaced Pages is probably very long. Given that lots of people are already going complex searches on Misplaced Pages by various existing methods, it seems unlikely that developing new methods to do the same kinds of searches would be a priority. --Teratornis (talk) 02:07, 19 August 2009 (UTC)

- Welcome to the Misplaced Pages Help desk. Your question appears to be a homework question. I apologize if this is a misevaluation, but it is our policy here to not do people's homework for them, but to merely aid them in doing it themselves. Letting someone else do your homework does not help you learn how to solve such problems.
Please attempt to solve the problem yourself first. You can search Misplaced Pages or search the Web.
If you need help with a specific part of your homework, the Reference desk can help you grasp the concept. Do not ask knowledge questions here, just those about using Misplaced Pages. --96.232.52.43 (talk) 19:19, 18 August 2009 (UTC)- The question is ill-posed, since only a few people can become astronauts, given the enormous energy, pollution, and monetary costs of getting up there. The vast majority of people represented by the word "we" will never go into space and thus cannot see anything from space. As to what on the earth astronauts can see from space, that depends on many factors such as the astronaut's visual acuity, the orbital height, the clarity of the atmosphere below, whether it is day or night, the angle of the sun, etc. The phrase "the two things" makes no sense either, as if only two things are visible. Listing order of new links, is there a protocol?
If I want to add a new link, under "external links", or "see also" internal or "notes", is there any rule about where to put it in the list? At the beginning (latest), or the end (last) or insert it somewhere else with a similar subject? JohnClarknew (talk) 21:59, 18 August 2009 (UTC)
- The Manual of Style doesn't offer guidance. I prefer alphabetical order (absent compelling obvious alternative). Keeps in mind that "Notes" is usually for footnotes, which is auto-generated.--SPhilbrickT 23:01, 18 August 2009 (UTC)
- Misplaced Pages:Layout mentions alphabetical for See also and Further reading. PrimeHunter (talk) 23:11, 18 August 2009 (UTC)
- Alphabetized? Hmm. I can see users starting with A or AA or AAA just to get to the top of the list. Obviously a "common sense" decision. My common sense tells me that it should be in date of entry order, latest on top. For bios, often the latest entry is the obituary. Perhaps, the Manual of Style could be more specific about this. I note, though, that links placed within articles are favored. Thanks for the input. JohnClarknew (talk) 23:52, 18 August 2009 (UTC)

- However, it shouldn't be a huge problem. If an article has more than 3-4 external links anyways, most of them are likely in violation of WP:EL guidelines. External links sections should contain only a few links, such as official websites of the subject of the article, and little else. If there ARE lots and lots of external links, most are probably spam and not approrpriate for Misplaced Pages. --Jayron32 01:55, 19 August 2009 (UTC)
- See also WP:SPAMHOLE. Adding external links temporarily to an article in development may be a useful step toward converting them into footnote citations, but unfortunately a common misconception among users new to Misplaced Pages is that the External links section is a great place to build a linkfarm. See WP:NOTLINKFARM. --Teratornis (talk) 03:37, 19 August 2009 (UTC)

- If independent reliable sources outside of Misplaced Pages do not contain substantial information about your life, then you likely do not meet the inclusion criteria for an article at Misplaced Pages. Disambiguation pages should only contain links to articles at Misplaced Pages, and since there is not an article about you at Misplaced Pages, your name should not appear at a disambiguation page. Additionally, you should not be adding information about yourself to Misplaced Pages. By the way, this site is called Misplaced Pages, not wiki. A wiki is any website using wiki software; there are thousands of them.

Inserting a Photo
I can't figure out how to insert a photo. Instructions are impossible to follow. How can I do it as owner of the copyright? -- David —Preceding unsigned comment added by 76.255.198.85 (talk) 02:48, 19 August 2009 (UTC)
- The instructions are hardly impossible to follow - I followed them as have thousands of other users. The instructions are merely complex and tedious to follow, because they have to deal with many different cases of media file ownership and the mind-numbing detail of international copyright laws. You haven't provided enough information to tell us what conditional branch you are on. What does your photo depict? Is anything in the photo under any sort of copyright protection? (That is, first we must determine whether you can actually assert copyright on the photo; if it only shows natural things, you're probably OK, but if you made an accurate photographic reproduction of other copyrighted work(s), you may have a problem.) Have you already published the photo anywhere else? Are you willing to license your photo as free content? That means allowing anyone to reuse your photo for any purpose, including commercial use. What instructions did you read and where did you get confused? If you want to figure it out yourself, which is a good idea actually, you can read the instructions under Commons:COM:EIC#Copyright which cover a lot of cases, but not all of them. Note that images are often a very difficult aspect of Misplaced Pages for new contributors to grasp. I did not attempt to upload any images until after I had done a lot of other editing. --Teratornis (talk) 03:57, 19 August 2009 (UTC)
Able to contact Queen Rania of Jordan
What should I do if I want to contact Queen Rania of Jordan. The problem is wth email I have to have valid code to sent. I want to ask her some questions if she have met all African national leaders or just one from Senegal. Or even if I'm able to contact her on email she may not answer the emails. Could this be because she is busy in life? I'm asking because I don't see her with other African politicians. Could meetings ban photos and taking images?--69.229.39.33 (talk) 03:25, 19 August 2009 (UTC)
- This Help desk is for questions about using Misplaced Pages. I don't think you can contact Queen Rania by using Misplaced Pages, except in the unlikely event that she has a user account here. In general, contacting heads of state is difficult for ordinary people. If you yourself are a head of state or acting in some official capacity, you might consult your country's state department or foreign service. If you are just an ordinary individual like most of us, you have very low odds of getting an audience with anyone who is important. People who are important generally talk to other important people. --Teratornis (talk) 03:42, 19 August 2009 (UTC)
Server load from blank transclusion
I have an almost identical question to this one languishing at WP:VPT about the be archived without answer so I thought I'd give you lot a go. Though we are generally told to not worry about server load, I nevertheless want to know if any server load is taken up by a template which is transcluded but has no text or code of its own, such as {{void}}. I was under the impression that the more code and text a template calls, the larger the load it places on the servers (this is implied at Help:Substitution#Partial substitution if I'm reading it correctly). So if the answer to the first question is yes, even a blank transcluded template takes up some server load, is it negligible in comparison to, say, a transcluded template that is constantly calling some sizable block of text and code?--Fuhghettaboutit (talk) 04:33, 19 August 2009 (UTC)
- The only way I can think of to answer this question would be to set up your own MediaWiki wiki (e.g. a wiki on a stick), and run it under Software performance analysis tools which can analyze the server load. MediaWiki's performance will depend on the PHP and MySQL tools on which it runs, so you might look for information about measuring their performance. Without actually looking into it, I would guess that every transclusion would have to involve at least one MySQL query, so there would be some cost for the computer to determine that the query returned no data. But MySQL queries are pretty fast. Lots of people have been optimizing database performance for a long time. Ever since the 1960s people have been asking how to retrieve data from their databases faster. Presumably Misplaced Pages benefits from some of those accumulated results. --Teratornis (talk) 00:34, 20 August 2009 (UTC)
- Thanks for answering Teratornis. I didn't realize this would be so obscure a matter when I asked it but considering that no one ventured their toes in the water at VPT where the tech gurus congregate, it must be. I appreciate the advice but I don't think I'm invested enough in finding an answer to to go through those steps (I don't even own a USB stick and wouldn't know where to begin to pick the right analysis software). By the way, the background to this question is at Misplaced Pages:Village pump (proposals)#Tracking substituted templates; {{z number doc}}.--Fuhghettaboutit (talk) 02:12, 20 August 2009 (UTC)
- A USB stick is not necessary; you can also install MediaWiki on your computer's hard drive under a Web server package such as XAMPP, and run it as a personal wiki. It takes some work, but it's a good way to learn about how to administer a wiki if you are interested. It's hard to predict whether a given technical questions about MediaWiki will turn out to be obscure or laborious to answer. The mw:Project:Support desk has a disturbingly high ratio of unanswered questions. A person can get spoiled by the high quality of help generally available on the Misplaced Pages Help desk, but once you get into more technical aspects of MediaWiki things can get scary fast. Only a few people might know what you need, and good luck finding them. --Teratornis (talk) 21:43, 20 August 2009 (UTC)

Misplaced Pages links to official nomenclature documentation for receptor protiens?
As part of an international body of pharmacology responsible for nomenclature of receptor, how can we get permission to update and add links to the appropriate documentation relating to nomenclature of GPCR, VGIC, LGIC and Nuclear Receptors. When we try to add links to the official pages of IUPHAR we are kicked out and warned not to spam wikipedia. Help!! —Preceding unsigned comment added by 129.215.239.166 (talk) 09:15, 19 August 2009 (UTC)
- I looked quickly at the edit history of International Union of Basic and Clinical Pharmacology, and I don't see these warnings. If you could point to one, it would be helpful.
- As a more positive suggestion, when someone removes a link because they think it is spam, the best thing to do is go to the discussion page, and explain why the link is appropriate. People more familiar with the subject matter can then discuss their concerns with you. I took a quick look at this site, assuming it is the one you are talking about, I think it belongs, but I haven't done enough homework to conclude for certain. Please try that approach, and if that fails, come back and we can suggest alternatives.--SPhilbrickT 13:31, 19 August 2009 (UTC)

Rabies article/map
Hi,
I'm not sure if this is the correct place to write to, anyhow, I was reading the article on rabies and when you scroll down the page you find a map of "rabies free countries". The list shows Finland, however it is not shown on the map. I am not skilled enough to edit the page but hopefully someone else could do this? Small thing but bothers the perfectionist! 3 Questions/ Website Info/ References
I am currently working on a page for a House Congressional Candidate in the 2010 General Election. How do I show that I have ownership of his personal campaign website so that I can copy/ paste his biography information onto wiki directly from the website?
Second: I am very confused on how to use the reference bar tools. I know I am supposed to click the reference key, but what next? Where do the citations go? I keep getting a red error message.
Third: Is there any way I can post a picture of the candidate without having 10 articles created?
thank You —Preceding unsigned comment added by Cgougs (talk • contribs) 15:33, 19 August 2009 (UTC)
- Well, first of all, it appears the article you created was advertising/campaigning for the candidate, which is not allowed. Please remember that all articles on Misplaced Pages must be written neutrally and the subject must be notable. If you are interested in releasing the copyright for the website material, please follow the instructions listed here. Finally, in order to upload images, your account must be autoconfirmed, which means that it has made ten edits (not created ten articles) and been active for four days. improvement to main page
Misplaced Pages's opening page <http://en.wikipedia.org/Main_Page> can be improved for every user. Please put a starting cursor in the "search" box. See how Google does this: <http://www.google.ca/>.
This simple improvement will save one click for every Wiki user, every time they access the system. The math suggests the scale of this improvement: Wiki gets about 40,000 page requests every second.

walled garden of crap
I'm a bit stumped about the best way to proceed - I've come across a walled garden of crap, namely the beauty pageant area. The sources for most of the articles are awful and largely promotional - blogs, corporate puff site etc and the writing is uniformly dire, gushing and full of weasel words and phrases. The wikiproject for this area seems to have died a couple of years ago and it's too big of a job for one editor. Where the best place (if there is no wikiproject) to get some assistance? --Cameron Scott (talk) 16:34, 19 August 2009 (UTC)
- Well, you could ask for help at the Misplaced Pages:Content noticeboard. Or you could ask for help from the Misplaced Pages:WikiProject Guild of Copy Editors or get a Misplaced Pages:Peer review. Just some ideas. Good luck! --Jayron32 19:09, 19 August 2009 (UTC)
- Another approach is to just pick some problems you know how to fix, fix them, and leave informative edit summaries with links to the friendly manual pages you are following. Other editors may come by later, learn from your edits, and fix more things. One great thing about Misplaced Pages is that nobody has to feel personally responsible to fix everything. Trying to organize teams of editors to attack problems in a large-scale way is sometimes useful, but it is not usually necessary. In fact that may be a habit from our pre-wiki way of looking at things. Misplaced Pages can also improve in an organic self-emergent way, without always requiring explicit top-down attempts to organize people around a task. So if you can't find anyone to help solve all these problems quickly, don't worry about it. Just do what you can, and let time do the rest. --Teratornis (talk) 00:22, 20 August 2009 (UTC)

Conflict of Interest question
I work for a company that has commissioned me to make a web site describing there services and products during the building of this site I was required to research several topics and write articles about them (mainly products sold). Most of my research found that the online realm was greatly lacking in information regarding these items even though they are quite common in our market.
For example the wikipedia page about flanges does not contain very much information and only one external reference.
I would like to know if posting my articles or excerpts from these articles and then linking back to the site I am building would constitute a conflict of interest? The company has paid me to produce the content so I feel as if they own it now and not referencing them in my mind would be disgraceful. Please advise. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 98.191.224.86 (talk) 19:54, 19 August 2009 (UTC)
- As a start, read wp:coi. If you've become an expert on flanges, your assistance in improving the existing articles will be welcome. However, if you add information you've written for someone else's website, it may not be a reliable source. It may be a valid external link or additional reading link, but it would be best for you to contribute to the talk page, and disclose your potential conflict. If you want to add something that is noncontroversial - for example, as part of your research you've found some good reliable sources on the subject and want to link them in, go ahead and do it. If you have material about which there is a question, you can link it to the talk page, then let a neutral editor decide it is improves the article or not.--SPhilbrickT 21:56, 19 August 2009 (UTC)
- (ec)You have become an expert, and your company's site wil be a published source. It's not what we consider a reliable source, but for something like flanges, it's a whole lot better than nothing. Go ahead and cite your web site. It would be better directly cite the material you found during your research, though, instead of citing your web site. The other major problem you have is that you must avoid infringing the copyuright of the company's web site. You are performing work for hire, so the company owns the copyright. If the company does not object, you may place a compatible license on the company site. Alternatively, they may let you write the Misplaced Pages articles first, thereby licensing the material under the CC-BY-SA and/or GFDL, and then copying it (with attribution) to the company web site. As a separate issue, please read WP:COI, but I would guess that it will not be a problem for flanges and the like. Just declare your interest on the article's talk page and ask for a review. And thanks for the help, we need it. -Arch dude (talk) 01:52, 20 August 2009 (UTC)

Arabic names for foreigners?
Can somebody explain why in some arabic countries, for ex. Bahrain, the foreigners that there are living should change their names to one new in arabic language? This is the case of the world champion in 1500 m in the IAAF W. C. Berlin 2009 Yusuf Saad Kamel, born in Kenia as Gregory Konchellah. Thanks. Leonprimer (talk) 00:15, 20 August 2009 (UTC)

Adding new name to list of Chileans of Italian descent
I have just added the name of Alfonso Calderón Squadritto to the page CHILEANS OF ITALIAN DESCENT. However, it did not turn up at the right place (under letter C). I don't know how to do this. It wouldbe necessary also to LINK the name to Calderón existing wikipedia article. —Preceding unsigned comment added by Roberto Torretti (talk • contribs) 01:01, 20 August 2009 (UTC)

Can someone help me give better advice?
I added a Cookies welcome template to User talk:Dvornicsek and she asked for help on my talk page, but it's about copy-paste claims on her article and I don't know if there's a policy to link to or exactly what I should recommended. I added some information to her talk page, but is it any good? I'll admit, maybe I'm not the right person to be welcoming people.----occono (talk) 01:17, 20 August 2009 (UTC)

Follow-up: Is this the appropriate time to use either a Misplaced Pages:Workpages or Misplaced Pages:Subpages? I would hate to see this article not progress and would like to give the editor the chance to improve the article and have someone review it before moving into the main spaceCptnono (talk) 13:36, 20 August 2009 (UTC)
- Let me interject a bit on conflict of interest. Misplaced Pages:Conflict of interest does not state that you cannot edit articles of organizations that you have a vested interest in. What it does state is "Where advancing outside interests is more important to an editor than advancing the aims of Misplaced Pages, that editor stands in a conflict of interest."
- In my opinion, an editor with close ties to an article should disclose those ties, acknowledge that they have read and understand the guidelines and pledge to act in the interests of Misplaced Pages. Such an editor can use their user page or an about page and can add userboxes or free text to describe their interests. The template {{user disclosure}} can be used for disclosure. ---— Gadget850 (Ed) 14:55, 20 August 2009 (UTC)

Deletion of my contribution
Hi, I am very new here and I find very difficult to create an entry. I did it eventually about an Graphic Author who is working for DC comics and who has already a solid career in the Graphic Design. However Misplaced Pages don't find him relevant and I have some links I can add about him to show he is known in Spain. But I don't know how to stop the deletion. If its enough adding those links? Why you see names of people who are less relevant than him and they are already published? Please help. Emurri (talk) 13:09, 20 August 2009 (UTC)
- Hi, the article you mean is Fernando dagnino guerra, correct? The article was tagged with a prod because you haven't provided any proof that Mr. Guerra is notable enough for inclusion. If you are able to provide references meeting the reliable sources guidelines, the article will probably be kept. Please read over that page for examples of what resources you could use. Also try looking through google. ceranthor 13:36, 20 August 2009 (UTC)
- You can also create your article in a user subpage - that way, no one will be nominating it for deletion, and you can work on it and get it ready in peace. The downside is that people won't find it in a search, but if it isn't quite ready, that shouldn't be a problem. If you want to do this, but don;t know how, just ask.--SPhilbrickT 13:43, 20 August 2009 (UTC)
- The notability criteria applying for this particular article is WP:ARTIST. Please make sure that the subject qualifies them, and add the relevant information (with sources) to the article. You can object to the deletion by simply removing the prod tag with your reason given in the edit summary or article talk page. However, if you haven't addressed the issues about the article, it will probably be taken to WP:AFD to decide whether it should be deleted or not. ≈ Chamal ¤ 13:46, 20 August 2009 (UTC)

- Please consider moving the material to a user subpage, where you can work on it without fear of it being deleted. That said, you have a very tough challenge. I didn't find a single mention in a Google search or in Google books, so establishing notability, even with a single mention in a newspaper article, is going to be a challenge. Your grandfathers files, if personal, may be historically interesting, but don't help support the article, until they are published elsewhere.--SPhilbrickT 17:26, 20 August 2009 (UTC)
- As Sphilbrick mentions, it might be an idea to move this to your user space (just let us know if you want this to happen). I have used the cite news reference format with the information provide (but if you happen to have the paper story useful, let me know if you have the details of the writer, the page, etc - as well as the actual date of the fire). As Sphilbrick also says, you really have a hard task ahead of you. I could find no references to Kohl automobile, Kohl's plumbing - and the Wilkes-Barre Record Almanacs located at Ancestry.com didn't have any relevant entries (I checked from 1898-1903) for either "runabout", "kohl plumbing" or "kohl automobile". Google searches revealed nothing, unfortunately... if you have access to a library in Wilkes-Barre, they might have either books or newspapers that reference the car and/or the companies - but I think a local search will be needed, as sources online are probably not available. -- PhantomSteve (Contact Me, My Contribs) 18:10, 21 August 2009 (UTC)
- postscript I have added the article to WikiProject Automobiles and have left a message on their Project Talk Page, asking if someone more knowledgeable could have a look, and perhaps locate further sources of information. -- PhantomSteve (Contact Me, My Contribs) 18:26, 21 August 2009 (UTC)

Question re: FA review
I recently came across a featured article, List of Brisbane Roar FC players, which has had a maintenance tag on it since November 2008, does this alone qualify it for a review and possible delisting? -- œ 19:05, 20 August 2009 (UTC) http://en.wikipedia.org/Wikipedia:Featured_list_candidates/List_of_Queensland_Roar_FC_players
- This is a decision for the group that does the reviews. They know the guidelines and requirements. But I doubt they want the list to be complete before a FA status. But if the missing information is accurate and verified, then the tag can be removed. You can put a message on the talk page about your concern. --Kslotte (talk) 21:13, 20 August 2009 (UTC)

AfD Question
Is it an appropriate step to be WP:BOLD and add a redirect to an article currently up for deletion? Or should I hold off on that step until the AfD has had more time to come to consensus? Lithorien (talk) 13:22, 21 August 2009 (UTC)
- Articles at AfD should not be redirected before the discussion closes and that usually takes around 7 days. The AfD started today and you made the only comment so far. You definitely shouldn't redirect the article but you can make a post saying "Redirect to Danny Wallace (humourist)" (or to the section Danny Wallace (humourist)#Danny Wallace and the Centre of the Universe) in the discussion. Hi, I am currently aware of a recent event in Toronto but do not know if it would qualify to make the page under "events" in August 20th AddZack (talk) 00:52, 21 August 2009 (UTC)
The Event is a tornado touched down with 1 dead in Durham Ontario . Plus there were several sitings of Tornados in the Woodbine and Vaughan regions which caused extensive damage to Vaughan Mills and to homes in the Martin Grove - Highway 7 area .. Houses had roofs torn off and at Rutherford and Highway 7 houses were destroyed or severly structurally damaged

Strange display of Misplaced Pages pages
Please help! Just now when I opened Misplaced Pages the main page comes up without the navigation and search column on the left side of the page - the rest taking up the whole width of the page. Also, the link to my own page, tec., is no longer at the top right of the page, but listed in a group below all the news, etc.
This is when I use (as I usually do) the latest version of Firefox browser (I run Windows Vista SP 2). However, when I open Misplaced Pages in Windows Explorer it looks normal.
Have you any suggestions as to how I can get it to display properly in Firefox (Version 3.5.2)?

Not receiving verification email
There is a problem somewhere with verifying my email address: I am not getting the email that Wp is supposed to be sending. As a newbie sysop on another MW-powered wiki, I am particularly interested in finding out what's going on, since I might have to answer such questions myself.
I hope I have rounded up all the usual suspects:
- Typed the address in, twice. Pasted it in, once. (Same nothing.)
- Checked local client (Tb 2.0.0.22 (20090605)) for filters (off) and junk caught (none).
- Checked ISP (RoadRunner) web-based mail, which I normally don't use, for filters (none found) and junk caught (none).
For the obvious reason, I am not posting my email address here; I get almost zero spam, and would like to keep it that way. Somebody with root access can probably dig it out of my account in the database, or I could email somebody directly, with reasonable privacy.
Suggestions welcome. --LCE(LCE talk contribs) 08:56, 21 August 2009 (UTC)
- The mail may be blocked before it reaches a point you can access. Help:Email confirmation#Known issues says: "If you are unable to receive the mail with your normal mail service then you can try another, for example one of the free webmails in comparison of webmail providers." In my tests of two mail services the mail from Misplaced Pages has always reached me within seconds. PrimeHunter (talk) 10:41, 21 August 2009 (UTC)
- Thanks for the idea, but I haven't got another service. And a lot of mail from the other wiki gets through just fine. Is it possible to check the bounce messages, from undeliverable email? I can go hassle my ISP, but I need to know what to hassle them about: bouncing your emails, or not making them visible to me. "@cfl.rr.com" should be a good search string.
- BTW, that help page wasn't linked from anywhere useful that I could find, so I added a link in Help:Contents/Account settings.--LCE(LCE talk contribs) 12:14, 21 August 2009 (UTC)
- The mail is from wiki@wikimedia.org which must be sending a lot of similar emails and risk being suspected of spam. If your other wiki is not from Wikimedia then it probably has less risk of that. The English Misplaced Pages alone has 48,514,758 user accounts. I guess only paid and busy developers would have access to sent and bounced mails if they are stored at all. I don't know whether they will investigate individual cases and answer questions. Setting up a free webmail account is fast and easy for many services but checking it regularly for new mails may be annoying. Help:Email confirmation is linked from MediaWiki:Prefs-help-email which is displayed under E-mail options in preferences. Help:Contents/Account settings and maintenance is also a good idea. Excuse me, can someone help me? I want to unite 2 username: User: Adryano and User: Adyadryano into user: Adyadriano. all are mine. but now I have a global cont on the last, User: Adyadriano Please help me. --Adyadriano (talk) 15:43, 21 August 2009 (UTC)
- I'm not very experienced with global usernames, but can I redirect you to the place where username changes are requested? I believe they have to be changed on all the projects you belong to. ceranthor 17:47, 21 August 2009 (UTC)
google images?
If an image is on google images, does that mean it's free-use and possible to upload it directly to the wiki:commons? Laughingtam (talk) 16:31, 21 August 2009 (UTC)
- No. Most images that you will find on Google images are copyrighted and should not be uploaded to commons. Some places to look for free images on the internet are listed here. Flickr's free image search is also useful. —SpaceFlight89 16:38, 21 August 2009 (UTC)
- Google Image's advanced search feature provides an option to search for freely licensed images. For more information about licenses suitable for Commons, see Commons:COM:L and the links under Commons:COM:EIC#Copyright. --Teratornis (talk) 17:45, 21 August 2009 (UTC)
Creating a list in a table.
How do you properly put a list in a table?
I'm trying to put this into two columns on a local wiki site:
http://shetlopedia.com/Bressay_%28Constituency%29
I'd rather have it as a list without any breaks, if possible. —Preceding unsigned comment added by JAStewart (talk • contribs) 17:08, 21 August 2009 (UTC)
Any help would be appreciated, thanks. JAStewart (talk) 17:08, 21 August 2009 (UTC)
- You could port {{Column}}, {{Col-begin}}, and {{Col-end}} to Shetlopedia. If you don't understand what that means, try asking on the Shetlopedia Forums for someone with more knowledge of MediaWiki template porting to help you. Note that the Misplaced Pages Help desk is for questions about using Misplaced Pages. The Help desk gets questions like this from time to time, and it would be nice if someone (for example, you, after you figure this out) could write a page of instructions: "How to port templates from Misplaced Pages to your local wiki project". --Teratornis (talk) 17:24, 21 August 2009 (UTC)
Or you can try:
{| |valign="top"| *Item A *Item B |width="50"| |valign="top"| *Item C *Item D |}

I used this bot a few days ago, but today when I tried to use it, it states :
Page Title : 403 Forbidden Page header: Forbidden Page content(text): You don't have permission to access /cgi-bin/wp/wp10/run_wp10.html on this server.

Is this a legitimate reference?
In the article List of diplomatic missions of Palestine reference 2 is just "UNESCO. May 12, 1989". Is this a legitimate reference? It doesn't identify a specific document.
