He played is a graduate of both Phillips Exeter Academy and Stanford University, where he was a 4-year starter in the early 2000s and set the all-time College World Series record for career hits. In 2004, the Cubs drafted him for a second time after he turned down their offer in 2003 to finish his senior year at Stanford.
