Richmond is the capital of Virginia, a state (officially the Commonwealth of Virginia) of the United States of America. As of the 2000 census, it has a population of 197,790. It is the county seat of Henrico County, although, as are all cities in Virginia, it is an independent city, not part of any county, but it is surrounded by Henrico and Chesterfield Counties.

Richmond served as the capital of the Confederate States of America during the American Civil War.

Richmond is the home of the University of Richmond and of Virginia Commonwealth University. Virginia State University is about 20 miles south of Richmond, in the suburb of Petersburg. It is also the home of the Richmond Braves minor league baseball team.
