Aufs (AnotherUnionFS) is an alternative version of UnionFS, a filesystem service which implements a union mount for Linux file systems. It has been developed by Junjiro Okajima since early 2006 .

It is a complete rewriting of UnionFS, with the aim of improving reliability and performance. It has also introduced some new concepts, like writable branch balancing, and many improvements . Some of these new ideas have been re-implemented in the UnionFS 2.x branch.

Aufs has been chosen as a replacement for UnionFS by the Knoppix live CD Linux distribution since the end of 2006, "for better stability & performance" This unioning service replaced UnionFS in Slax (and Linux-Live scripts in general) since version 6.

Aufs replaced UnionFS in Xandros Linux distribution, available in the ASUS Eee PC model 901.

Aufs is used in Arch Linux 2009.08 instead of UnionFS.
