Hanayu Ashitaba is the main character of Mixed Vegetables. She is a 15 year old pastry chef going to school at Oiwaka High, training to be a sushi chef. (She stated once, in a side note, "I almost got sent to a pastry school instead!") Although her family owns one of the most prestigious patisseries in Japan (the Patisserie Ashitaba), she wants to become a sushi chef. This lifetime want goes back to the first time she went to a sushi restaurant (which happened to be Sushidokoro Hyuga, the family of Hayato Hyuga, her classmate). She has a friend named Ichii and a little brother named Natsume. He takes after his father in the fact that he doesn't want any boys to come near her (which he stated, "Who are you? Don't go near sis!"). She doesn't think that her parents would let her be a sushi chef because they want her to take over the shop (Natsume's dream is to be a baseball player, so she doesn't want to put the burden of being the owner of the shop on him), so she tries to get Hayato to fall in love with her by displaying her cooking skills.

Personality

Hanayu is shown to be a very calm person in most situations, but can get very violent and loud. She is also shown to be very strong and has steady hands, as a result of training so much to be a pastry chef. She is very kind toward her brother, Natsume, and loves talking about him. (Bragging to Hayato once, she said, "Aren't we adorable!?" while standing next to Natsume.)

Appearance

Hanayu has brown hair and brown eyes. Her hair is relatively long, layered and usually kept up with lots of clips. Hanayu has three holes in each ear, usually taking out her earrings when she cooks. She is average height, only being a few inches shorter than Hayato.
