MTV Roadies is a youth-based popular reality television show on MTV India. The format of the show has been developed by Team MTV over the past six seasons, and it is still evolving, getting bigger with each passing season. However, as a part of their marketing strategy during Roadies 5.0, MTV actively pushed Raghu Ram as the man behind the show. As a matter of fact, Raghu was just another producer in Roadies 1 (He did not even take a single interview!) and the show was actually produced by the production house Miditech. Raghu was not involved during the Roadies 6 journey and is totally out of scene during Roadies 7.

When asked about the show, Raghu, in his capacity as the EP of the show, said, "Roadies has travel, adventure, drama, touch of voyeurism..."

Selection Procedure

The Roadies auditions are held in various major cities in India. People who turn up for the audition are made to fill a form, then they undergo a group discussion, following which, selected candidates are chosen for personal interview conducted by the MTV panel. The MTV panel constitutes of experts from MTV. While the judges were not exactly pushed as characters till Season 4, Season 5 onwards MTV started promoting Raghu Ram as the chief interviewer and the man behind the show as part of its marketing strategy. It paid off for sure as Raghu was soon established as the rudest guy on television! The interview round was designed deliberately acrimonious to test the participant's attitude, tolerance and patience levels. The key differentiator in Roadies 4 was Gulshan Grover, Raghu made a larger than life presence in Roadies 5, Raghu and his twin Rajiv were the USP of Roadies 6 while Irrfan Khan makes his grand entry in Roadies 7! The number of Roadies has ranged from 13 to 20, though in the first season, only 7 people had taken the bike ride through Chennai to Chail. There is no limit as to how many times a person can audition. For Season Six, 20 roadies were selected from the interviews.

Format

The selected Roadies are provided with Hero Honda Karizma bikes to travel on a pre-decided route. Each episode features a vote-out, at the end in which the Roadies eliminate one of their fellow Roadies by an anonymous vote, thereby decreasing the number of Roadies carrying on with the journey.

Each episode consists of number of tasks or challenges which they have to perform. These tasks can be either "Money tasks" or "Immunity tasks". In the "Money tasks", the Roadies add cash to their account on successful completion of these tasks while in "Immunity tasks", the team or roadie which wins gets Immunity. The team or roadie which attains Immunity becomes safe from vote-out i.e its members cannot be voted-out in that particular episode. The above mentioned tasks are either team-based (i.e. performed between two or more teams) or individual-based (i.e. performed one-on-one). At the end of scheduled journey, the last Roadie who survives till the end is declared the winner and walks away with the total cash accumulated by performing the money tasks. The fifth season was the first time when an Advantage task was introduced. The winner(s) of an Advantage task get(s) some advantage in the vote out, which may include multiple votes or being the only one(s) to vote in the vote-out.
