Paranormal Activity is a 2007 horror film written and directed by Oren Peli & this decades Blair Witch Project. The movie premiered at the Screamfest Film Festival in US on October 14, 2007 and at the Slamdance Film Festival on January 18, 2008. The film received a limited release in the United States beginning September 25, 2009.
Plot summary
The movie centers around a young couple, Katie and Micah who are haunted by a demonic presence at their home which turns out to be Katies deceased grandmother who, unknown to Katie, happened to be a schizophrenic nurse serial murderer who killed 10 of her patients. Attempts to communicate with the ghost of the grandmother only serve to enrage her further. The couple soon realize that they have nowhere to hide to escape from the ghost because she is following and haunting Katie. The couple contacts a psychic who is unable to ward off the evil spirit. In a surprise twist at the last minute of the movie, the ghost of Katies grandfather appears and defeats the grandmothers ghost, however, not before Katie is killed. The movie is presented through the cameras set up by the couple to capture the ghost activity.
Production
Paranormal Activity was written and directed by Oren Peli, an Israeli-born video game designer who had no formal film training. The film was shot in one week in 2006 with a $15,000 budget and a hand-held video camera.
Critical reception
Limited screenings of the film have been well received by critics so far. The movie currently has a 89% "Fresh" rating from Rotten Tomatoes based on 19 reviews.
