Muslim Mafia: Inside the Secret Underworld That's Conspiring to Islamize America is a 2009 book by U.S. State Department-trained Arabic linguist Paul David Gaubatz and Washington-based investigative journalist and Hoover Institute fellow Paul Sperry. According to the Charlotte Observer, it "portrays the Council on American-Islamic Relations as a subversive organization allied with international terrorists."

With a forward by U.S. North Carolina Congresswoman Sue Myrick, it attracted endorsements from three other U.S. Congressmen—Trent Franks (R-AZ), John Shadegg (R-AZ), and Paul Broun (R-GA)—as well as media attention beginning with its release in mid-October 2009. The book and its endorsement from these Congressmen were denounced by U.S. Congressman Keith Ellison (D-MN) in a speech officially entered into the Congressional Record and broadcast on CSPAN on October 26, 2009.

Overview

The book is based on a six-month undercover investigation of the Washington-based Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR) by Chris Gaubatz—son of the book's co-author Paul David Gaubatz—who posed as a convert to Islam. The book uses documents Chris Gaubatz obtained as a CAIR intern to support its authors' assertions that CAIR is a front group for the Muslim Brotherhood and that CAIR supports international jihad against the U.S.

Impact and reception

Because of the four U.S. Congressmen's endorsements, the book prompted news coverage about itself and CAIR on six networks: CNN, CSPAN, Fox News, MSNBC, CBN, and Al-Jazeera.

Hudson Institute fellow Steven Emerson gave an editorial endorsement of the book in a November 2, 2009, article entitled "It's Radical Islam, Stupid". In the wake of the Fort Hood shooting, the book received two more editorial endorsements: one from national security and Pentagon journalist Bill Gertz, writing in the November 12 Washington Times, and one from Congressman Tom Tancredo (formerly R-CO), writing in the November 6 edition of the The Denver Post.

Other media sources carried commentary on the book have have included the right-leaning The Politico, which has reported on the CAIR lawsuit against the Gaubatzs, noting "In an interesting twist, despite the book's harsh claims that CAIR is part of a "jihadist network," the suit does not allege libel or defamation", and Northeastern University's student-voiced Huntington News, whose review of the book concludes: "Muslim Mafia has enough documented facts to show the dangers we face from radical Islamists and the government officials and elected representatives who kowtow to them." Feminist psychologist Phyllis Chesler blogs glowingly of the book in her essay on Pajamas Media. The left-leaning TPMMuckraker has written in horror against the book's accusations against CAIR-sponsored Capitol Hill interns.

Arab-American comedian Dean Obeidallah poked fun at the book, writing on October 14, 2009, in The Huffington Post, that "a 'Muslim Mafia' does sound cool on some level. Americans love mafia shows, so this 'Muslim Mafia' could inspire the first show on US TV to star Muslims. Or maybe I like the term 'Muslim Mafia' so much because my father is Muslim and my Mom is Sicilian. With this pedigree, I'm a shoe-in for a top position in the 'Muslim Mafia.'"

Litigation

In November 2009 the book received further attention when federal judge Colleen Kollar-Kotelly ordered several source documents removed from Gaubatz's website, after CAIR brought a federal lawsuit against Gaubatz and his son (who had obtained the documents as a CAIR intern) for allegedly stealing the documents.
