Climategate refers to a November 2009 incident involving the hacking and leaking of emails and documents on global warming research from the Climatic Research Unit of the University of East Anglia. The neologism 'Climategate' was coined to intentionally draw an analogy between the incident and the 1970s Watergate scandal.
In November 2009 hackers accessed private files located on the CRU's servers, posting the emails they found online. Climate change skeptics indicated the private conversations about science and the researchers' dislike of climate change skeptics reveal a conspiracy to falsify attribution of recent climate change to human activity. Journalist James Delingpole stated that if the scandal is true it will severely harm the credibility of Anthropogenic global warming supportes claims. On the other hand, supporters of the current scientific consensus on climate change called the leaked documents "cherry-picked", "misrepresented" and "out-of-context".
The CRU's researchers stated that the e-mails "have been taken out of context and merely reflect an honest exchange of ideas." Phil Jones, Director of the Climatic Research Unit, and one of those involved in the incident, called the charges that the emails involve any "untoward" activity "ludicrous."
According to the University of East Anglia, the information published on the Internet had been selected deliberately to undermine the strong consensus that human activity is affecting the world's climate in ways that are potentially dangerous. "The selective publication of some stolen e-mails and other papers taken out of context is mischievous and cannot be considered a genuine attempt to engage with this issue in a responsible way".
