Anthony Taylor is an English football referee from Wythenshawe, Greater Manchester, who officiates in the Football League.
Career
Taylor started refereeing in the Northern Premier League in 2002, progressing to officiate in the Conference North in 2004. He was appointed to the Football League List at the start of season 2006-07, and his first match appointment was the 0–0 draw between Wrexham and Peterborough in a League Two encounter on August 12, 2006.
On November 14, 2006, he was put in charge of an England Under-19 international friendly versus Switzerland at Gresty Road, home of Crewe Alexandra. England won 3–2.
After a Football League Championship game between Hull City and Charlton Athletic on October 2, 2007, he received considerable criticism from the managers of both teams over his handling of the game, which finished 1–2. During the game there were many disputed decisions, a disallowed goal and two sendings off, both of which were disputed by the team managers.
On January 1, 2008, he took charge of the League One match between Nottingham Forest and Huddersfield Town, where he gave a contested 35th minute penalty award to the away side, at the same time sending off Forest's Kelvin Wilson "with a bizarre decision". Despite doubts being raised by the video replay of the incident, the appeal Nottingham Forest raised to the one match suspension was turned down by the Football Association.
On 28 December 2009, Taylor took charge of a game between Swansea and Crystal Palace, sending off Swansea's Albert Serrán in the 17th minute for no apparent reason and prompting Swansea's manager, the experienced Paulo Sousa to say that "The sending-off was ridiculous and if standards of refereeing are not improved it will kill the game".
