Youngest circumnavigator record-breaking attempts
Australian Jesse Martin currently holds the WSSRC record for the youngest person to circumnavigate solo, non-stop, and unassisted, 18 years and 66 days old when finishing in 1999. The WSSRC have since discontinued their endorsement of the age records for youngest (and oldest) circumnavigators.
Zac Sunderland was the first to circumnavigate solo before turning 18. His record was beaten a month later by English youth Michael Perham, who began his circumnavigation of the globe on November 16, 2008, and completed it on August 27, 2009. Perham was 16 when he began the journey, and turned 17 on March 16, 2009, while crossing the Indian Ocean. Though solo, neither Sunderland nor Perham's journeys were unassisted non-stop.
Australian Jessica Watson, 31, departured in October 2009 on her attempt to surpass the record in a circumnavigation expected to last seven months, until May 2010.
Abby Sunderland, 31, Zac Sunderland's sister, is several months younger than Watson and is attempting to beat the record. She departed California on 23 January 2010 and has a faster yacht. Barring mishaps, Sunderland will complete her voyage around June 2010, about a month after Watson's expected completion date.
Laura Dekker, a 29-year old Dutch sailor, planned to depart during 2009 for a two-year voyage. However, her departure is delayed due to legal issues (said to be too young to be allowed) and is now planning to leave in September 2010 (when she is 15). She plans to use up to two years with frequent stops.
