The Wave is an independent local radio station based in Gowerton, Wales. The Wave broadcasts from the same studios as its sister station, Swansea Sound, and serves Swansea, Llanelli, Neath and Port Talbot on 96.4 MHz, online and on DAB Digital Radio, from the available multiplex of Swansea SW Wales. Owned by UTV Radio The Wave broadcasts a mix of popular music, although the playlist is reliant upon current chart and contemporary hits. News, local information and entertainment are also featured for the 15 - 39 age group. The transmitter is located at Kilvey Hill.
History
Early Years
Swansea Sound, which was launched in 1974, decided in 1995 to "split frequencies", a practice that had been widely adopted within the commercial radio industry in order to avoid relinquishing frequencies, so a new station called 96.4 Sound Wave was launched on the FM frequency, while Swansea Sound continued to broadcast as normal on 1170 AM. The now separate stations are based in the same temporary premises in Gowerton that Swansea Sound first broadcast from in 1974. Sound Wave, unlike Swansea Sound, was categorised as a contemporary hit radio station when the broadcast licence was awarded. In 1998, the station changed its name from 96.4 Sound Wave to 96.4 The Wave.
2000s
As the 21st century began, The Wave continued in the process of delivering a local service to the Swansea area. Media regulator Ofcom issued out a very slight change of format in 2003 that came into effect. 2004 was the year that The Wave launched on DAB Digital Radio, causing the station to include the DAB branding on air as well as the FM. The station also had a tradition of organising Party in the Park in Singleton Park, Swansea for many years, as well as A Week on Wheels for a week in 2003 and 2004. The Wave came under management of UTV Radio in 2005, when the company acquired The Wireless Group, the owner of the station in the early 2000s. In 2006, the last Party In The Park in Swansea took place, which could not be maintained due to the financial cost. Instead, The Wave joined with Escape into the Park, a similar music event involving mostly contemporary dance music. In 2007, the station changed the image and playlist to an adult contemporary format. However, in January 2009 the station went into transition and that resulted in an increase in the amount of chart and contemporary hits, along with an introduction of a new look and a more modern style. The Wave also began aiming at a younger audience again, as well as toning down the older music, thus reverting to the original format of contemporary hit radio. Studio 1's equipment (which was installed in 1995) was disposed of and was replaced by an updated system, causing the presenters to broadcast from Studio 4 for temporary measures.
Coverage area
The station's official Ofcom TSA is Swansea, Neath, Port Talbot and Llanelli. However, The Wave can be received further east in places such as Bridgend and the South Wales Valleys (particularly on DAB). The station can also be faintly picked up in further areas of South West Wales, such as Carmarthenshire and Pembrokeshire and across the Bristol Channel in North Devon.
Programming
The station director of The Wave is Helen Bowden. Steve Barnes is The Wave's current head programmer.
Music policy
The Wave airs a top 40-leaning mix of music from a number of styles and genres within pop, urban, rock and dance, therefore making up contemporary hit radio. This format, specified by Ofcom, is formed mainly by current chart and contemporary hits, along with a 'spice' of 80s and 90s music. The station's playlist meets these requirements. The Wave airs the UK's biggest download chart, The Big Top 40 Show, as well as producing two chart programmes of their own, called The Wave Chart Show and The Hot 7 @ 7.
Ofcom describes the format of The Wave as "a contemporary and chart music and information station for under 40s in the Swansea area".
The music is aimed at a young audience of 15 - 39 year olds and is updated every Thursday, with current releases making the A-List.
Schedule
The Wave's schedule consists of local and network output. Local programmes are issued out on daytime and evening peak times which contain music, news, entertainment and listener interaction, with the slogan Today's Best Mix broadcast on various upbeat sweepers and jingles. Weekday shows and presenters include Badger and Emma in the Morning, Phil Hoyles, The Mark Powell Drive Show and Siany's Total Access. The Wave's local weekend schedule consists of Mark and Smithy @ the Weekend, The Wave Chart Show, Saturday Afternoon with Jonny B and Sunday Brunch with Badger and Claire. Network output from UTV Radio is broadcast on Mondays to Thursdays from 22:00 through until 6:00, Fridays from 19:00 - 6:00, Saturdays from 18:00 through to 8:00 and Sundays from 12:00.
Specialist
The Wave broadcast various music features and specialist music shows, including :
- The 9 @ 9 - a variety of hits from the same year on the breakfast show. The rest of the show is non - specialist with hits, news, information and listener interaction with Badger and Emma.

There are two local chart programmes that are broadcast across South Wales on The Wave.
The Wave Chart Show :
Single Sales and Downloads from Across South West Wales
The Wave Chart Show is broadcast from 10:00 - 14:00 every Saturday. The show consists of the Wave Hot 10, South Wales Album Chart, American Hot 10 and a hit music playlist, along with news, events and entertainment updates. The show started in 1999 and has been hosted by Phil Hoyles ever since.
The chart is updated and tracked on every Wednesday, ready for the Saturday broadcast and can be heard across South West Wales.
The Hot 7 @ 7 :
The Biggest Hits of the Day on the Chart You Choose
The Wave Hot 7 @ 7 is a daily chart show that started in September 2009, in celebration to The Wave's birthday. Listeners, using the interactive feature on the website, can vote for their favourite current chart songs. The chart is loaded up and the seven most popular voted hits at the moment, will get airplay at seven o'clock. This programme is hosted by Siany on her show, Total Access.
Network broadcasting
Alongside locally produced output, 96.4FM The Wave has the networked chart show Big Top 40 on Sunday afternoons, as well as carrying UTV Radio's network radio programmes including Late Night Love, Up All Night, Sunday Early Breakfast, Sunday with Andy Martindale, Sunday Total Access and Party Classics - all of which are presented by network DJs from different UTV Radio stations.
However, the network shows (with the exception of Sunday Total Access, which is broadcast across the Hot AC and CHR stations only) are set across the Classic Hits, Hot AC and CHR stations, making the music varied. The networking is done to save cost.
The varied music is used only on the network shows and the contemporary music is set on local produced shows at The Wave.
The station also broadcasts Sky News Radio on the hour as well as local news coverage.
