Hi Alkivar. I've just marked '''over 112 registered accounts''' as sockpuppets of known vandal and stalker ]. NASA stuff

January 14, 1963 Nasa Facts

I'd be willing to scan just about all of the NASA stuff if it's really only 500 pages or so. Do you want me to send it back when I am done? I was thinking some of the documents might be better OCR'd and converted to wikitext articles, if they are predominantly textual. My scanner can scan up to legal size. For anything larger, I have a hand scanner that scans a path 4 inches wide, can stitch those scans together for larger images. please delete my email address when you are done with it. Pedant 17:54, 2004 Oct 16 (UTC)

pages are in the mail you should recieve them soon. Alkivar 04:18, 21 Oct 2004 (UTC)

The package of NASA material has arrived. It appears to have survived the trip well. I haven't opened it yet, will try to start tonight.Pedant 22:34, 2004 Oct 26 (UTC)

I'm stuck for a bit on scanning, the computer the scanner is connected to has had the RAM removed, I'm waiting to get it back from Kingston. They received it on the 22nd of November, so I expect it back in a matter of days. Pedant 07:23, 2004 Nov 29 (UTC)

OK, I have the scanner running, trying to figure out the OCR thing. I uploaded this one file for test purposes. I'd like to convert this kind of thing to wikitext rather than keep them as jpgs, cause they get pretty big. If you know of any resources to help me figure out optical character recognition, I'd be grateful. Pedant 22:12, 2004 Dec 29 (UTC)

all right, I have worked a bit at it,and looks like I'm started. The front page for the archive, at present is at this page on wikisource Pedant 06:55, 2004 Dec 30 (UTC)
EXCELLENT! Alkivar 01:24, 31 Dec 2004 (UTC)

You been doing any more with those NASA Facts papers? Sorta curious as I havent heard anything in a while. ALKIVAR™ 01:02, 16 November 2005 (UTC)

yes, I have taken a break on that, I'm working on getting a faster scanner, but I will definitely follow through on the whole pile. I'm really busy these days so faster is really gooder... gotta run, let me know when you get back from your break. Pedant 02:18, 27 November 2005 (UTC)

A quick note to say thanks

I just wanted to drop you a quick note to thank you for your support in my request for adminship. It was certainly a wild ride, and I really appreciate you taking some time out to contribute. ClockworkSoul 16:26, 24 Nov 2004 (UTC)

I know it's a bit frustrating now, but in the end I think it's going to be vastly improved, and most of the credit goes to you. Jayjg | (Talk) 02:54, 3 Jan 2005 (UTC)

Nice work, and thanks

I, ClockworkSoul, award you this barnstar for your innovation and initiative in the creation of the The Defender of the Wiki Barnstar

I just wanted to thank you for coming up with the idea for the The Defender of the Wiki Barnstar, which evolved into the finest (and in my opinion highest) award that we have here at the 'pedia.

Oh, and by the way (for what it's worth) I like your orange sig and the associate image. It adds a bit of flavor to sometimes bland pages. – ClockworkSoul 14:07, 10 Jan 2005 (UTC)

Defender of the Wiki Barnstar citation

Kudos on inventing the Defender of the Wiki Barnstar. Since I think defense of Misplaced Pages is extremely important, I've edited the DOTWB page to include their citations and supporting evidence. In fact, the only award I can't find supporting evidence for is... um... yours. Could you link it in when you get the chance? Thanks! Alba 00:45, 15 Mar 2005 (UTC)

Signature

Thanks for voting in my RfA - but please don't use images in signatures! They are unnecessary server load. See ]. r3m0t June 30, 2005 20:28 (UTC) (reply here)

What are the size restrictions for signatures, anyhow? I've been considering using one myself. —RaD Man (talk) 1 July 2005 01:20 (UTC)
For the record i've had this conversation with the dev's ... the image is on commons, not on the en server. The server load is therefore negligible. Or at least thats the conclusion we came to. As for the other reasons listed, it neither interferes with line height nor blinks... I think you worry too much :)  ALKIVAR 1 July 2005 06:45 (UTC)
Well, I trust the devs. OK then. r3m0t July 1, 2005 07:07 (UTC)

You have made a positive impact on Misplaced Pages, and I firmly believe sysop privileges would only enhance your contribution abilities. If you do not mind, I have taken it upon myself to nominate you for adminship on this hallowed occassion. Please see Misplaced Pages:Requests_for_adminship/nominate#What_to_do_if_you_are_nominated: should you wish to accept, as there have been some changes to the RFA process as of late. I have no issue with you beyond your lack of use of edit summaries (aggravated by the fact you were told about it in your previous RfAs). You should consider installing that javascript thing that doesn't allow you to submit edits unless you write the summary. Certainly no hard feelings. Congrats on your promotion! -- Rune Welsh | ταλκ | Esperanza 12:56, 8 November 2005 (UTC)

Hi. Congrats from me too on being handed the mop. You solicited input, but I'm not sure what I can say beyond what I already commented on in your RfA. While I certainly agree that some significant amount of experience should be required of an admin candidate before approval, I think putting a fixed number on either time or edit count is a poor way to evaluate candidates. We (in my opinion, anyway) want admins who are wise, knowledgeable, just, tolerant, have a thick skin, and easy to get along with. Counting edits is the wrong metric for evaluating any of those qualities. --RoySmith 13:17, 8 November 2005 (UTC)

I concur with these other editors. Please try and use the summary box more, and just calm down a bit when flustered. If you feel high strung, back away from the situation. I don't really have any pressing concerns at this moment, but just keep up the good work and I'm sure you'll do fine as Admin. See ya. --LV 14:38, 8 November 2005 (UTC)

My Latin may be a bit rusty, but that's still one of my favorite sayings. Thanks for the support, almost more than I can say. Permission to use Oakenfold image

I am currently trying to update the Spanish Misplaced Pages's articles on electronic music and I just started writing/translating the Paul Oakenfold page. I found your image and saw that it is copyrighted but that it may be used for any purpose so I was wondering if I could use it in the Spanish article? --D1lux Jan 2, 2006 21:32 UTC

Feel free to use it, all that my friend Utopium asks is that the same copyright tag and source is given.  ALKIVAR 22:18, 2 January 2006 (UTC)
Thank you, I just uploaded the image to the Wikimedia Commons (http://commons.wikimedia.org/Image:Oakenfold%40Nation.jpg) and added the tag, a brief disclaimer which lists Utopium's site as the source, and a link to the image's English Misplaced Pages page. I really appreciate your help in helping us expand/improve the Spanish Misplaced Pages :). D1lux 22:53, 2 January 2006 (UTC)

Brazil4Linux is at it again

I've been watching the edits, writing style and posting history of User:Dungeon_Siege (including his use of a so-called "anonymous IP"s that trace right back to Brazil4Linux's ISP, him calling everyone vandals, etc, and I'm now thoroughly convinced that he's another sockpuppet of Brazil4Linux. Can we get someone who can do user traces to track this latest one back to B4L? I think this might be the cataylst for a Permablock. I'm sure he's tracking the Doom127 contributions... This is giving me a headache. Daniel Davis 11:21, 2 January 2006 (UTC) (Doom127)

I'm sure Brazil4Linux is back on the Xbox page with Microsoft Fanboy. His quote "Wikinews is a sister project of Misplaced Pages and should be divulged" is almost exactly like Brazil4Linux's "Back with Wikinews link, because we should divulge Wikimedia projects if possible" and "We should divulge Wikimedia projects as possible". I think that a Permablock is the only way --GoldDragon 9:30, 3 January 2006 (UTC)

Thanks for your message. The one in the clown's cap looks a little like me, but it isn't a photo of myself that I have posted to Misplaced Pages, or remember from anywhere else. Image:Kingcrown.jpg has been listed as a possible copyright violation

An image that you uploaded, Image:Kingcrown.jpg, has been listed at Misplaced Pages:Copyright problems because it is a suspected copyright violation. Please look there if you know that the image is legally usable on Misplaced Pages (you may have to search for the title of the image to find its entry), and then provide the necessary information there and on its page, if you are interested in it not being deleted. Thank you.

Image:Kingcrown.jpg

I indeed saw that it was Crown Copyright, but you seem to be laboring under the mistaken impression that this is different from other copyright in a way other than what works may be covered by it and its duration. This is untrue. Works protected by Crown Copyright have exactly the same protection as others, and permission to reproduce it must be explicitly granted. (In the UK it's not even possible to print a copy of the Authorized Version of the Bible without a license. It's under perpetual Crown Copyright there even if its in the Public Domain in other parts of the world.)

So you acknowledge the image came from the Royal Family's official website. As it happens, this is not a website that grants blanket permission to reproduce Crown Copyright works that are on it. It has a copyright page which I link to directly but which you can get to from any of the web pages on the site. Go to it and read it. It says explicitly that you have to ask permission to republish anything on it. Permission to reproduce is limited to local copies and printouts.

Possibly you were misled by the text on Template:CrownCopyright. That text was cribbed from a website that did grant blanket permission to reuse its content. But this is far from universal, as you can discover on Crown Copyright. It's really a misleading template and probably ought to be deleted because any content that it applies to can also be tagged using one of the others. TCC (talk) (contribs) 21:41, 6 January 2006 (UTC)

Lend Me Your Ear

Hey... I've been wanting to create some spoken word articles for awhile but haven't until today. I created a *test* file on a small article and would like you to take a listen for some contructive feedback before I begin creating more. Anyway, if you have the time please take a look at Parks_of_Chicago. Jasenlee 03:13, 7 January 2006 (UTC)

Well a few positive comments: the voice is good (clearly audible, no significant accenting), the reading speed is good (easy to follow). The encoding is good (no noticeable artificing, no glitchyness). Filesize is good, bitrate is adequate but not too much. So for the significant stuff your doing A-OK. Now from someone like me with a background in audio recording I notice a few problems: I notice some loud plosives and sibilants. The best thing you can do for this is to physically move your mouth further away from the microphone when reading words that begin with hard sounds, this will help to muffle the hard sounds. Same for your strong S sounds, move away from the microphone (not much a few inches will even help). Other alternatives would be to use some sort of a filter to help remove them (Sound Forge for example contains a plosives and sibilants filter which can cuts sounds in those frequency bands adaptively (usually about 2-10% is enough).  ALKIVAR 12:03, 7 January 2006 (UTC)

Query

Would you please take a look at Special:Contributions/Sciurinæ? He seems to have struck through all of Yodo's votes, whether Support or Oppose, as meatpuppet votes. I think he may misunderstand what a meatpuppet is, and I feel it would be inappropriate for me to explain as Yodo voted Support for me - it may be percieved as a conflict of interest. Warez - not theft

My changes were not a duplicate of anything and your revert was totally uncalled for. It seems that almost every pro-warez argument listed is absurd and infantile. I come along and offer a more reasonable argument and you revert it for being a "duplicate." I looked at that list and didn't see anything remotely similar. Is the pro side not allowed to have logical arguments, is that it? Why not just change the arguments to something along these lines:

  • OMFG d00d counterstriek is liek $50 stuff shud be free copyright sux LOLOLOLOLOLOL!!!1
  • Screw Tom Cruise he has enuff cash money as it is
  • Micro$$$$$$$$$$oft is tooo rich!!!!

After all, it'd get the same point across - that only childish, simplistic arguments exist and that anyone who downloads a movie not available at reasonable quality (ie, not Movielink) is an ignorant 12-year old anarchist who feels entitled to anything he should desire. -- Noclip 23:28, 7 January 2006 (UTC)

Your not theft section was essentially the same as section #2:
Difference between copyright infringement and conventional property theft – Cracking software is different from theft or stealing other people's property, namely, it does not deprive the use of the software from the original owner. For example, if A steals B's car, B will no longer be able to use that car; but if A copies B's software, B can still use that software with no trouble.
As such it didnt need rehashing. I have no problem with you editing the article but we dont need two paragraphs stating essentially the same argument.  ALKIVAR 01:17, 8 January 2006 (UTC)`

Semi on Michael Savage

Hello, I would like to request that you reconsider your semi-protection of the article Michael Savage. Semi is supposed to be used for heavy bouts of vandalism -- vandalism that might get in the way of otherwise productive edits. I do not think this is the case for this article. The vandalism is not heavy - with only a couple of reverts per day. Also, semi is not supposed to be used to create two classes of editors (anons vs. others). The vandalism in this case can be adequately dealt with by watchlisting. Would you please reconsider your semi of this article? novacatz 15:30, 8 January 2006 (UTC)

There is a vote here where some users to try to overturn WP categorisation policy (whereby categories and subcategories cannot be placed on the same page) and force a subcategory (LGBT organisations) onto the North American Man/Boy Love Association page. Some of the comments made are distinctly homophobic and rather disturbing. Personally it gives me the creeps even mentioning NAMBLA but your vote on the issue would be welcome. PlayStation 2 Special Editions

Hi, I've seen your past works concerning images, so I'd like to ask your opinion on PlayStation 2 Special Editions. I was wondering if it is okay to use so many fair use images in one article? And there isn't much text - the article is basically a gallery. --BorgQueen 12:21, 9 January 2006 (UTC)

Agreed the article is essentially a gallery of fair use images. This use is VERY questionable. It cant be very hard to find someone who has one of those models to photograph it under a free license. As such I would suggest you merge this into PlayStation 2 or AFD it.  ALKIVAR 12:23, 9 January 2006 (UTC)

Vanity image uploads

You have a ton of images uploaded to Misplaced Pages for no other purpose than to have them in your user space. Misplaced Pages has no legitimate use for hige pictures of your face, or you messing around with a record, or your logo, or you and a long, long list of DJs, or you and Ron Jeremy. This site does not exist for you to turn it into free webhosting service for you. It would be nice if you tagged them all speedy delete as the uploader so they got cleared out without them having to be listed for deletion and be cleared out through the long way that wastes everyone's time here. This is an encyclopedia, not mypages.com or something of that sort. DreamGuy 12:49, 9 January 2006 (UTC)

If you have a problem with them, put them up on IFD.  ALKIVAR 12:52, 9 January 2006 (UTC)
I, of course, will, but I would have hoped that you would do the right thing yourself once inappropriate behavior was pointed out to you. But then why start now, eh? DreamGuy 12:55, 9 January 2006 (UTC)

My answers to questions

Specifically, which questions are you unsure on my position on? Regardless of your vote, I'm curious as to what I'm wishy-washy on, where I didn't clarify my position that well. Ral315 (talk) 14:31, 9 January 2006 (UTC)

I guess, well, its not so much as you being wishy washy, as being too broad for my taste in response to a couple questions, the recusal stuff for example. More of my opposition comes from your response to Ril regarding censure. I happen to strongly disagree that censuring should not happy for someone like Kelly Martin. It would be one thing if the arbitrator in question had been elected to the post, its quite another when its a god-king-has-spoken type situation. In case you hadnt noticed i'm quite against unilateral action on strongly debated issues. Other issues I have is I dont feel you put, well ok I dont think you put as much as I would want, into your respons regarding WP:IAR. A rule too often called in to trumph everything else. "But Your Honor, I was just following orders WP:IAR". Its definately nothing personal, while your age at first did make me a bit skeptical about whether you could really uphold the position, It really did get ignored when it came to my vote.  ALKIVAR 14:43, 9 January 2006 (UTC)
That's fine. I wasn't worried about the age issue, but I was curious as to what you were talking about specifically. Thanks for answering. Ral315 (talk) 16:33, 9 January 2006 (UTC)

User:GroundZero

Many thanks for blocking this sock puppet and appropriation of my identity. I only became aware of this today. It seems he was up to No Good. Thanks again. Ground Zero | t 16:53, 9 January 2006 (UTC)

Thank you for your time

I just wanted to thank you for listening to what I had to say. I have refrained from posting an "open apology" in large part because I have no desire to appear to be conceding on the underlying issue regarding userboxes, especially those which are used to attack either other editors or to attack specific points of view, and of course those which infringe copyrights, and there were so many people in that feeding frenzy on my RfC that were rabidly defending their rights to say whatever they want however they want that I was that I feared a capitulation would be taken as justification for their clearly inappropriate point of view. Enough time has passed that an apology for not involving more of the community in a discussion beforehand would not be out of line; enough community support for a more moderate position exists to keep the radicals on this point under control. I still believe that the userboxes I deleted should have been deleted and should again be deleted, but I am not going to press the issue at this point as there is a robust and relatively civil debate on the topic now that will, hopefully sometime in our lives, lead to a conclusion. I had also misjudged the degree to which the community has become committed to process, probably because I don't have much to do with deletion anymore (an area where process has become arguably too important). For those two misjudgments, I am willing to apologize.

I know you and I have never seen eye to eye. I don't understand exactly why, though. I'm arrogant far beyond a fault, and I understand this. I'm also almost always right, and that arrogance comes from being almost always right. I'd be interested in understanding what your other objections to me holding positions of authority in Misplaced Pages are, if you'd care to discuss them with me.

Jayjg and arbcom

Regarding your vote on Jayjg for the arbcom election, I'd just like to make sure you're aware he's only been on arbcom for about 6 months. --Phroziac . o º 18:42, 9 January 2006 (UTC)

My objection to Jayjg is twofold, 1) he was directly appointed by our "god-king" with no community input (a very major mistake) while I realize this isnt jayjg's fault, the only way to make it clear this is bad is to remain constant in my objection of direct appointment. 2) the longer you remain on arbcom the more uncivil/stressed out/harshly you react. I dont care if its only 3 weeks on arbcom... its stressful dealing with repeat trolls and attacks from both sides. Rather than lose someone like jayjg (6 months to a year from now)from the project all together due to burn-out I'd rather he not get re-elected and instead return to what brought him here in the first place, making an encyclopedia. From where I stand this opposition is a GOOD THING because I like the guy. It is not meant to be a strike against him. Does this make my position more clear?  ALKIVAR 19:35, 9 January 2006 (UTC)

112 DickyRobert sockpuppets and counting

Hi Alkivar. I've just marked over 112 registered accounts as sockpuppets of known vandal and stalker User:DickyRobert. To expedite the process, I've created template {{DickyRobert}}, modeled after the WoW tag. This problem has become out of hand; if you have not already, please consider bringing this to the attention of WP:ANI, WP:VP, and perhaps most importantly the arbitration comittee for further investigation. If you do not have the time necessary to do this, please let me know and I will assist you where I can. Best regards, Hall Monitor 21:12, 9 January 2006 (UTC)
