- A de facto independent state. Claimed by Uganda. Not recognised as sovereign by any other state.
- Sahrawi Republic - Sahrawi Arab Democratic Republic
- A de facto independent state claiming sovereignty over Western Sahara, which is also claimed by Morocco as its Southern Provinces. It received recognition from a large number of UN member states. Its government resided in exile in Tindouf, Algeria.
- Tafea - Tafea Nation (1 January 1980 to 26 May 1980)
- A de facto independent state declared from the centre of Tanna island. Claimed by the United Kingdom and France as part of the New Hebrides condominium. Not recognised as sovereign by any other state.
- Taiwan - Republic of China
- A de facto independent state; regarded by the People's Republic of China to be its defunct (and no longer legitimate) predecessor state. Territory was claimed by the People's Republic as Taiwan Province. In addition to Taiwan, the Republic of China also controlled parts of Fujian Province and part of the Spratly Islands, and had not renounced claims over mainland China and Mongolia.

- Vemerana - Republic of Vemerana (from May 1980 to August 1980)
- A de facto independent state declared by the Nagriamel movement on the island of Espiritu Santo. Claimed by the United Kingdom and France as part of the New Hebrides condominium until 30 July 1980, and claimed by Vanuatu thereafter. Not recognised as sovereign by any other state.
