Darlington is an industrial town in the North East of England. In 1991 it had a population of 96,700
The current borough was formed on April 1, 1974, as a merger of the old borough of Darlington with Darlington Rural District. Places within the borough boundaries apart from Darlington include Hurworth-on-Tees.
It lies within the traditional and ceremonial area of County Durham but on April 1, 1997 it become a unitary authority, and so is not governed by Durham in any way. It borders County Durham, North Yorkshire, and Stockton-on-Tees.
The town has coal and ironstone mines, and produces iron and steel goods and knitting wool.
Darlington has an attractive historic market area in the town centre and is famed for its associations with the birth of railways. The world's first ever passenger rail journey was between Darlington and nearby Stockton-on-Tees on the Stockton and Darlington Railway in 1825.
The town is the home of Darlington F.C.
