Unreferenced BLPs

Hello Thomas.macmillan! Thank you for your contributions. I am a bot alerting you that 97 of the articles that you created are tagged as Unreferenced Biographies of Living Persons. The biographies of living persons policy requires that all personal or potentially controversial information be sourced. In addition, to ensure verifiability, all biographies should be based on reliable sources. If you were to bring these articles up to standards, it would greatly help us with the current 9 article backlog. Once the articles are adequately referenced, please remove the {{unreferencedBLP}} tag. Here is the list:

Template:Nigeria-mil-bio-stub

Thanks - that is useful. I like it better visually than the Africa-mil-bio-stub template I was using when I remembered, and it is more precise, so more useful. I will try to remember to add it to any new articles.

I have no idea why I have been starting articles on the governors, but I want to keep going until they are all done. Sort of a hobby, like doing jigsaw puzzles with web sources as the pieces. Some of the military administrators have very few sources, which makes for very fragmentary articles, but I suppose they are better than nothing. Obviously there would have been plenty of news items at the time, but few of them are on the web. Google books gives tantalizing snippets. Let's hope editors who have access to better sources expand the articles. Anyway, thanks. Aymatth2 (talk) 21:17, 22 January 2010 (UTC)

Proposed deletion of Jordan Jefferson

The article Jordan Jefferson has been proposed for deletion because of the following concern:

This article does not meet the general notability guidelines; athlete who has not competed at the fully professional level of a sport WP:ATHLETE

While all contributions to Misplaced Pages are appreciated, content or articles may be deleted for any of several reasons.

You may prevent the proposed deletion by removing the {{dated prod}} notice, but please explain why in your edit summary or on the article's talk page.

Please consider improving the article to address the issues raised. Removing {{dated prod}} will stop the proposed deletion process, but other deletion processes exist. The speedy deletion process can result in deletion without discussion, and articles for deletion allows discussion to reach consensus for deletion. Onthegogo (talk) 19:50, 8 February 2010 (UTC)

Kačikol - Keqekolla

Kačikol 28 hits Keqekolla 2 hits

Also, Keqekolla is Albanian version of Kačikol, as Kačikol is real name, as i write. At the end, WP:MOSKOS is used, even it is inactive now, as Kosovo highly disputed status, names should be in Serbian, as you can see in ALL OTHER kosovo related articles. So please, your "fix Serbian vandalism. Don't push your POV here" is highly unneeded and unwelcome. --Tadija (talk) 20:19, 8 February 2010 (UTC)

Marshal Fouad Mohamed Abbu Zikry's page

Dear MR. Macmillan

I do not know what you have against Fouad Abou Zikry's history or person or family. I detest the way you erased the Misplaced Pages page claiming it has no facts and not encyclopedic.

Erasing history is not a very civilized thing to do. I would be very happy if you tell me who you are and what credentials give you the right to erase the page. All information that page is true and historically documented and I have the FULL RIGHTS from ALL Abou Zikry Family and from the Egyptian Navy and the Egyptian government to publish what I did and every one in all these entities was more than happy to assist me.

So kindly explain or just leave the page alone or will file a complaint to Misplaced Pages management against you as an abuser of information and if you pursue this any more, our lawyers (and we have ones in the US, UK , Canada, EU , Egypt and international ones too) will be looking for you for tarnishing the image of a decorated Egyptian military leader who is dead and can not defend himself and tarnishing the Egyptian Navy, armed forces and government, let alone the late Fouad Abou Zikry's family who are personally affected by this un_called for "claimed" academic impulse of yours that reduced the article to nothing.

So kindly leave matters at that to avoid hurting peoples feelings, calling people liars and to avoid legal action from all the parties involved here. We are busy civilized people and have no time for this child play but if are provoked unnecessarily we are willing to defend our name, legacy an honour till the end.

best regards The late Fouad Abou Zikry family —Preceding unsigned comment added by Moh777 (talkcontribs) 00:33, 28 February 2010 (UTC)

Abou Zikry page

Dear Mr. Macmillan

I need to know do you mean by Encyclopedic and reliable sources ?

The source for all personal information in the article is Egyptian navy and the family of late Fouad Abou (not Abu) Zikry's family. I will be more than happy to have his widow PhD Nadia El Shazly write you a letter to confirm and we can provide Misplaced Pages with an Offical letter from the Egyptian Navy with the current navy Commander in Chief confirming the information. I am not claiming to be anybody and I am not writing about myself.

As for the politics like the sinking of Eilat or Bab El Bandab, these are documented facts with references included under each section of the page.

I do not know what is your gain in raising such a dispute over a great man in my nation while there are other articles in Misplaced Pages that deserve more of your valuable time (I am serious not making fun or joking before you jump to your guns).

We would be very grateful if you let the man and the article rest in peace. We are publishing this for the people to know ho he was when search Misplaced Pages as a respected source of information on the internet. We did not attack anybody or want any kind of gain from publishing it except give the man his due biography in a respectable research site.

I will not revert your edits if you emptied the article again since this will be futile and child's play so if you did empty it agian (I did not look while writing this) please return it to what it was as I we would expect from civilized westerner carrying a family name of Macmillan (again I am serious here and not joking so do not jump to your guns).

Thank you again Architect Mohamed Elwan on behalf of Dr. Nadia El Shazly , Marshal Abou ZXikry's widow. —Preceding unsigned comment added by Moh777 (talkcontribs) 01:05, 28 February 2010 (UTC)

You put a Db-band up, removed it for a prod, then listed it at AFD. Which of the three do you want? I say stick with the speedy deletion (db-band). Ten Pound Hammer, his otters and a clue-bat • 19:31, 28 February 2010 (UTC)

New South Hall

I undid your deletion of the article on New South Hall not necessarily because I believe it's notable and deserving of an article, but that you should discuss such actions first. Are there specific reasons for why you believe it should be deleted now?-- Patrick {oѺ} 23:16, 13 March 2010 (UTC)

But still, there are procedures you could follow if you believe a subject isn't notable before you blank the page.-- Patrick {oѺ} 23:26, 13 March 2010 (UTC)
Which editors did you first contact about your decision? Which warning templates did you add to the article? Where did you propose its deletion? A redirect is not the same as a merge.-- Patrick {oѺ} 23:34, 13 March 2010 (UTC)

Speedy deletion converted to PROD: Blackstone Hall and Breckinridge Hall

Hello Namiba. I am just letting you know that I have converted the speedy deletion tags that you placed on Blackstone Hall and Breckinridge Hall to proposed deletion tags, because I do not believe CSD applies to the pages in question - A7 doesn't cover buildings. Thank you. JohnCD (talk) 11:10, 23 March 2010 (UTC)

Reasoned discussion on building deletions

The point raised is that there Misplaced Pages should develop a generic consensus on college residence halls, preferable on Wikiproject Universities first. Once the policy discussion occurs, then the individual articles can be reviewed in light of the consensus. By flooding AfD with all of the articles within a few days and at the same time expecting other editors to detect, comprehend and analyse what you are doing creates an impossible burden. It is unrealistic to expect other editors with a concern for good coverage of Universities to drop everything in their real lives, plus drop everything else that they are doing on wikipedia to address the many, many articles you wish to raise in just 7 days. Have you looked hard for sources on each of the university residence hall articles that you are trying to delete/redirect? Thanks, Racepacket (talk) 12:04, 25 March 2010 (UTC)

Tim Cowlishaw

You seem to watching that page like a hawk. What's up with that? And why have you repeatedly deleted his birth date? If you want, I can source this afternoon's Around the Horn where he blurted it out, or any number of credible sources, but in general, you don't have to source birth dates. Galaydh

If you Google Ali Khalif Galaydh's name you will see that every search result will come up as Galaydh, not Galaid. Your source is wrong. Being new to Misplaced Pages doesn't change this fact and is irrelevant. —Preceding unsigned comment added by Abdi1314 (talkcontribs) 04:53, 4 April 2010 (UTC)

I really wouldn't have any idea. I just joined Misplaced Pages yesterday. ...In all seriousness, you removed a category (People from XXX) that should have stayed even with the addition of the "Players of American football from XXX" category. I've been doing this for a while, I know what should and should not be there. Pats1 /C 21:16, 12 April 2010 (UTC)

You're neglecting the fact that the previous edits screwed up the formatting of the infobox so that it was being displayed as code. The main reason for my revert was to repair quickly so it wouldn't be viewable by the public for long; I knew that once a transaction is made one of the NFL roster templates, a user like User:Chrisjnelson or User:Eagles247 quickly follows it up with an update of the player's article, so I wasn't concerned with the changes that were made since they were going to be made, and made in the format that WP:NFL has deemed standard, by one of those editors very soon. And if a player was born in Place X, then we automatically add the "People from Place X" category. If I sound like a WP:DICK that's because me and other said users have been doing this for three+ years for NFL articles and we have it down to a science; quite frankly you have not. Fiat Tagliero Building

Re : I agree that it's unsourced, and the last edit was rather peacocky, but does it all need to be removed? I would have thought that just adding a maintenance tag such as {{Refimprove}} would have been better. I've got an Eritrea guidebook at home, so I'll have a look when I get chance and see what can be retrieved. Any thoughts? —  Tivedshambo  (t/c) 14:55, 14 April 2010 (UTC)

In general, I think it's better to keep stuff that is probably correct but unverified (unless it's controversial, or negative BLP), as sources can be added later. From WP:DEADLINK: "Do not delete factual information solely because the URL to the source does not work any longer. WP:Verifiability does not require that all information be supported by a working link, nor does it require the source to be published on-line" (I realise this is in slightly different circumstances, but the same guideline applies). I've therefore reinstated the text again, though removed the peacock language and added {{refimprove}}. Also please do not call someone a vandal simply because they disagree with you. —  Tivedshambo  (t/c) 05:13, 16 April 2010 (UTC)

Biting

Namiba - comments like this are not on. If you continue to bite this newby, I will raise the matter at WP:ANI. I'm not going to get involved with an edit war over the article, but I suggest you gain consensus before reverting again. Also, read WP:NOTVAND - deliberately adding misinformation may be vandalism, but adding unsourced information is not (or most of us would have been blocked at some point!) —  Tivedshambo  (t/c) 18:35, 16 April 2010 (UTC)

Category - "American women's basketball players"

You created a category - "American women's basketball players" At the risk of being anal, it literally means, Basketball players belonging to American women. I would think "American women basketball players" would be better, or ""American female basketball players"--SPhilbrickT 20:59, 18 April 2010 (UTC)

You have it all wrong

Please re-read WP:V and WP:BLP.

Specifically, WP:Biographies of living persons#Challenged or likely to be challenged and WP:Biographies of living persons#Remove unsourced or poorly sourced contentious material

direct quote from WP:BLP

"All quotations and any material challenged or likely to be challenged must be attributed to a reliable,"

Nowhere does it say "Remove everything that is unsourced"

common stuff, like a person's nationality or a person's personal bio, is NOT "Material challenged or likely to be challenged"

example.

If an article said, "Bob Example came out of the closet in 2008 and has since been an avid supporter of gay rights" that is material that needs a source- because if it was untrue, that could be considered slander

however, if an article said "Bob Example was born in Washington, DC and has two children" is not material that needs a source, because no average person is going to say "that's slander! it must be removed"

Example, you don't see a source on George W. Bush's article after the sentence, "was the 43rd President of the United States" because nobody (and by nobody I mean nobody with common sense) will challenge that, so it does not need to be sourced.

WP:V states that "All material in Misplaced Pages articles must be attributable to a reliable published source to show that it is not original research, but in practice not everything need actually be attributed. This policy requires that anything challenged or likely to be challenged, including all quotations, be attributed to a reliable source in the form of an inline citation, and that the source directly support the material in question"

information like nationalities, birthplaces, heights, weights, birthdates, ect ect, do not fall under "anything challenged or likely to be challenged"

Also, the personal section you removed from the Mike Vrabel article is sourced. If you click on the Chiefs bio (I updated the link because the one you removed was dead) it states all that information in the personal section of his bio. RF23 (talk) 19:36, 27 April 2010 (UTC)

Editors who take Misplaced Pages policies and warp them to the extreme or remove Every single item without a source only harm Misplaced Pages, by being counter-productive and degrading of the articles. Please change your ways so you don't fall under those categories. RF23 (talk) 19:36, 27 April 2010 (UTC)

you brings up a valid point there. Personally, I don't know why we have ethnicity categories in the first place, it seems like they've only caused trouble. I still think you're going a little over-board on the removing. I'm not sure if this is the case with you, but I've known editors in the past who will just remove any info without taking the time to find sources for it. Most of the time, google can provide sources for the majority of unsourced info that gets removed. I hope that before you go trigger happy removing info, you take a few seconds to look for a source. RF23 (talk) 21:45, 27 April 2010 (UTC)
Thank you for pointing that out. I was unaware that categories were so controversial or that there was ever abuse of them at any point. I agree that editors need to be more "source happy" so to speak with BLP's. Hopefully this isn't an issue anymore. RF23 (talk) 21:57, 27 April 2010 (UTC)
