Xylology means the "study of wood". It is composed of "xylo-" (derived from the greek 'xylon'= "wood") and "-logy", meaning "science of", "study of". Actually this term is hardly ever used, and is not closely defined. Note the use in "palaeoxylology" = "the study of fossil wood".
