David McCann (born March 17, 1973 in Belfast) is an Irish professional road bicycle racer. He used to cycle for the Taiwan-based UCI Continental team Giant Asia Racing.
McCann was the Irish national road race champion in 2000, 2001 and 2006. He has also won the Irish national time trial championships a record 6 times (2001, 2002, 2004, 2005, 2009 & 2010).
In 2005, McCann captured the overall title at the Tour de Korea. In 2006 he won the Tour of Indonesia; 2 stages in the Tour of Thailand; 1 stage at the Tour of Qinghai Lake and 1 stage in the Tour of Azerbaijan. He represented Northern Ireland at the Commonwealth Games time trial, finishing 5th.
McCann was hit with a six-month ban following a positive test for the substance Norandrosterone in 2002 during the Tour of Austria, which returned a reading 3nanograms above the permitted level of the substance. Laboratory tests showed a legal glutamine supplement he was using contained norandrosterone not listed on the label. This evidence led to him being given the minimum allowed six month suspension and fined 2000 Swiss Francs. Like several other athletes suspended around this time, McCann was sponsored by sport nutrition company Maximmuscle.
On 20th Sept 2009, McCann broke Chris Boardman’s long-standing British 25 mile time trial record in Port Talbot. Later that week, he finished an excellent 11th in the World Championships Elite Time Trial in Mendrisio, Switzerland. His time of 1:01:36.35 was 3 mins 40 secs behind the gold medallist Fabian Cancellara. This was McCanns best ever performance at the World Champs.
