Nottingham Forest F.C. are an English football club, based in Nottingham, and named after the Forest Recreation Ground. They currently (as of 2004) play in Division One of the English Football League.
Nottingham Forest (affectionately known as just 'Forest') were considered a small team in English league standards until the mid 1970s. The team then excelled through the English league system under the influence of their manager Brian Clough, winning the old First Division Championship in 1978. Forest then went on to win the European Cup twice in succession; they also won the European Super Cup which is held between the European champions and the South American champions.
Except for 1949-1951, they have been in either the FA Premier league (or old First Division) or the new 1st (old 2nd) Division since they joined the League in 1892. They were last relegated from the Premier League in 1999.
Nottingham Forest's charitable approach to the sport enabled teams like Arsenal and Brighton and Hove Albion to come into existence. Forest donated their football kits to Arsenal to help them establish themselves — which is why the London side now wear red. Forest also helped secure a site to play on for Brighton.
There was a scare in early 2002 that the club would be made bankrupt and non-existent. This was not helped by the collapse of a major sponsor by the name of ITV Digital.
The club's current manager is Joe Kinnear. Their previous manager, Paul Hart, was sacked in February 2004 after a run of 14 games without a win.
