ABN AMRO is a Dutch bank with offices all over the world.
It is the result of the merger in 1991 of Algemene Bank Nederland (ABN) and AMRO - the Amsterdamsche-Rotterdamsche Bank.
History
- 1824: King Willem I created the Nederlandsche Handel-Maatschappij (NHM) by Royal Decree to revive trade between the Netherlands and the Dutch East Indies.
- 1861: De Twenstche Bank was founded.
- 1863: The Rotterdamsche Bank was founded, as was the Nederlandsch-Indische Handelsbank/Nationale Handelsbank.
- 1871: The Amsterdamsche Bank was founded.
- 1933: Hollandsche Bank voor de Middellandsche Zee (HBMZ) merges with Hollandsche Zuid-Amerika Bank to form Hollandsche Bank-Unie (HBU).
- 1959-60: Indonesia nationalized the local operations of the Dutch banks, Nationale Handelsbank NV, Nedelansche Handel Mej (NHM), and Escompto Bank. The nationalized banks became the base for three of the four Indonesian banks that failed in 1998 and that the Indonesian government then amalgamated in 1999 to form Bank Mandiri, the largest bank in the country.
- 1962: Rotterdamsche Bank acquired Nationale Handelsbank and sold its branches in Bangkok, Hong Kong, Singapore, and Tokyo to Chase Manhattan Bank.
- 1964: Amsterdamsche Bank merged with Rotterdamsche Bank to form AMRO Bank. Nederlandsche Handel-Maatschappij immediately merged with De Twentsche Bank to form Algemene Bank Nederland (ABN).
- 1968: ABN acquired Hollandsche Bank-Unie.
- 1991: ABN and AMRO merged to form ABN AMRO Bank.
Cluster bombs
From research done by the Campagne tegen Wapenhandel it appeared that ABN AMRO owns parts of INSYS, the British manufacturer of cluster bombs.
