Township (Assiginack)

Manitowaning is found in the county of Assiginack on Lake Huron. It was the first European settlement in Assiginack as well as on all of Manitoulin Island. Manitowaning is the main town in the county of Assiginack and was originally founded in 1836 as a center of the island's Aboriginal education. In the town of Manitowaning there are a number of various shops and businesses including restaurants, drug stores, gas stations and car repair shops, hair dressers, grocery stores, and gift shops. There is also a very accomodating lodge in Manitowaning where you may stay while you visit Manitoulin Island.

Cottages

Most of Manitowaning's population lives in cottages just on the outskirts of the town. These cottages mainly line the coast of Lake Huron up intil the Indian Reserve of Wikwemikong that is found right across the bay from Manitowaning.

Wikwemikong

Wikwemikong (locally known as Wiky) is the indian reserve that is right across the bay from Manitowaning. It is an unceded indian reserve which means that the British offered them a deal with their land and they did not accept. The reserve is occupied by the Ojibwa, Odawa and Potawatomi peoples, under the Council of Three Fires. See http://en.wikipedia.org/Wikwemikong_Unceded_Indian_Reserve for more information on Wikwemikong.

Events

There is an annual smash up derby in Manitowaning where anyone over 18 may enter the car into a small tire ring and smash their cars into each other. The last car still able to move wins that round. But note that though it is entertaining there have been incidents where small rocks and hubcaps have injured spectators. Depending on how many cars are entered there could be from 3-7 rounds in the derby. In Wikwemikong there is also an annual Pow-Wow that is held on every civic weekend (the first weekend in August). This pow-wow is thought of to be the largest and oldest pow-wow in all of eastern Canada and is considered on of the top pow-wows in North America. Including that there is a small theater company located in Wikwemikong as well. In the town of Manitowaning there is a local skateboard park, Tennis, volleyball and basketball courts, a golf course, a local beach, and what may be a horse racing track. There is also very good fishing near Manitowaning where you can catch bass, pike, and trout for either sport or for food. As well as that there is great hunting near Manitowaning where you can catch deer and buck, bears, and various other wildlife in that region.
