The Sakas or Saka race were a group of proto-Turkic people who lived in present day Uzbekistan around 3000 BC. They were the Scythians, who were also described by other names: Massagetaei, Alans, Sarmats, Ishkuz.

According to some, then, this Saka race with an affiliated tribe under a different name emigrated to northern Europe, into the area of the Baltic Sea. Most contemporary philologists find this claim to be based on fanciful etymology, and note that there is little archaeological evidence for major cultural contacts between anyone in Turkistan and the Baltic area.

The Sakaas were also one of several tribes that conquered India from the north-west. The Indian National Calendar starts from the first year of the Saka Era (ACE 78).
