==Early life and education==

Born ] ], Shefman grew up in ], ]. He attended ] where he received a ], after which he went to ] where he received a ] in Canadian studies, writing his thesis on ] in Upper Canada.

==Early career==

From 1980 to 1988 he was the national director of the League for Human Rights of ]. In 1988, he took the position of director of communications and education for the ]. In ] he left the commission to start his own human rights consulting firm.

==Political career==

From 1997 to 2000, he was a trustee for the ] board. From ] until ], he was a member of the ] Board of Governors. Prior to that he served as President of the York University Alumni Association. Currently he is a fellow of McLaughan College and an Associate of the York University Centre for Practical Ethics.

In ], Shefman was elected to ] for Ward 5. He was elected to this position in a by-election following the resignation of ] upon her election to the ].

Previously, from 2000 to 2004, he served as a school trustee of the ].
