The TV series The Simpsons has been released on DVD format in several different compilations. Beginning in 2001, box sets featuring all episodes from a given season, plus extras features, have been released throughout the world in Region 1 (North America), Region 2 (Europe), Region 4 (New Zealand, Australia, and Latin America) and Region 5 (Russia, most of Africa, and Central and South Asia) encoding. Other compilations, generally including episodes featuring a specific theme (such as Christmas), have also been released in various regions.

Season boxsets

The DVDs for the first five seasons are standard digipak box formats with a memorable couch gag on the cover, the next five are available in this format (themed with one of the five main family members) and a plastic clamshell in the shape of one of the Simpson family's heads. Starting with Season 11, the boxsets came with a secondary character theme (so far there has been Krusty the Clown, Comic Book Guy and Ralph Wiggum), in an accordion style set of cardboard sleeves into which the discs slide. This format has received several complaints. Also for these seasons are limited edition sets that come with a removable moulded face attached to a cardboard sleeve. The boxsets contain all the episodes of the season with audio commentary, deleted scenes, an introduction by Matt Groening, other special features (with the exception of season 20) and a small booklet to guide the buyer through the episodes and their seasons. As of January, 2010 and the release of Season 20, the sets are being released in Blu Ray format as well as DVD. Thus Season 13, released on August of 2010, is available in BluRay format. It should be noted, though, that the Simpsons began broadcast in High Definition (720p) with the 10th Episode of Season 20.
