- January 20 - Alexander the Great forces the Persian Gates, leaving the way open into Persis, the Persian homeland.
- January 30 - Alexander enters Persepolis, the ceremonial Persian capital, which is burned.
- June - Darius III, Alexander's opponent, leaves Ecbatana, fleeing Alexander's advance
- July 17 - Darius is murdered by supporters of his lieutenant Bessus, who proclaims himself King Artaxerxes V. Alexander pursues the murderers of Darius into northeastern Persia.
