Rick Perry (born March 4, 1950) is a Republican politician and the current Governor of Texas. He assumed office in December of 2000 when then-Governor George W. Bush resigned to become President of the United States, and was elected in 2002 over Democrat Tony Sanchez.
Prior to becoming Governor, Perry served as Lieutenant Governor from 1998 to 2000, Commissioner of the Department of Agriculture from 1990 to 1998 (an elected constitutional office in Texas) and in the Texas House of Representatives from 1984 to 1990.
