Great Yarmouth VA High School is an English coeducational comprehensive school on Salisbury Road in the town of Great Yarmouth in Norfolk.

Admissions

It accepts around 1000 students aged from 11 to 16, following an expansive extension program throughout 2008 which saw the graduation age to high school decreasing from 12 (year 8) to 11 (year 7). Significant oversubscription has resulted in enrollment exceeding the intended 1000 for September 2008. The school does not have a sixth form; the nearest sixth forms are East Norfolk Sixth Form College and Great Yarmouth College.

History

The former Great Yarmouth Grammar School, which was founded in 1551, became the comprehensive Great Yarmouth High School in September 1981. In 1998 the school was awarded Technology College Specialist Status and in 1999 was designated V.A (Christian non-denominational) reflecting the terms of its Foundation. It is under the jurisdiction of Norfolk LEA.

In November 2008 the Technology Specialist College status ended as the school became a Humanities Specialist College; this followed an extremely successful Ofsted report the preceding May which decreed that the school was good with outstanding features.

Both the school and the town share the same shield. The school colours are black and red.

The High Standard is the school newspaper which is produced two times a year, around May and November.

Academic performance

It gets GCSE results at the England average. Sixth form places are provided elsewhere at the East Norfolk Sixth Form College.
