Deb Fischer, born (1951-03-01) March 1, 1951 (age 73), is a Nebraska state senator from Valentine, Nebraska in the Nebraska Legislature and the wife of a rancher.
Senator Fischer was born in Lincoln, Nebraska and graduated from the University of Nebraska-Lincoln in 1988 at age 37 with a B.S. in education. She is a member of many agricultural organizations including AgBuilders of NE, NE Cattlemen, NE Farm Bureau and Sandhills Cattlemen Association. Before being elected to the NE Legislature, Senator Fischer was a Commissioner on the NE Coordinating Commission for Post-Secondary Education. She also served on the Valentine Rural High School Board of Education, NE School Finance Review Committee, NE Agricultural Leadership Council, and the University of NE President's Advisory Council. She was President of the NE Association of School Boards.
Senator Fischer is a 2005 BIILD Fellow with the Bowhay Institute, a 1991 Kellogg Fellow and a 1988 NE LEAD Fellow.
She is married to Bruce Fischer who ranches near Valentine, Nebraska with their three sons Adam, Morgan and Luke. Her family has been recognized for their conservation and environmental stewardship, receiving awards from a number of organizations. The Fischers are members of the luxurious Dismal River Golf Club in Mullen, Nebraska.
State legislature
Senator Fischer was elected in 2004 to represent the 43 Nebraska legislative district, the largest in Nebraska. Blaine, Boyd, Brown, Custer, Hooker, Keya Paha, Logan, Loup, McPherson, Rock, and Thomas counties, as well as parts of Cherry and Holt counties are encompassed by the district, which includes the communities of Atkinson, Ainsworth, Bassett, Broken Bow, Dunning, Mullen, and Valentine. She serves as the Chairperson for the Transportation and Telecommunications Committee and is a member of the Executive Board, Natural Resources Committee, Reference Committee, Committee On Committees, and the Midwestern Higher Education Compact Commission.
She is an Executive Committee member of the Midwestern Legislative Council and also serves as Chair of the MLC Energy Committee. She is a former Executive Committee member of the National Conference of State Legislatures.
