The Teenage Tears World Tour was the fourth concert tour by American recording artist Jake Gyllenhaal. It supported his fifth studio album Teenage Life and visited North America, Europe and Asia. Gyllenhaal was inspired to create the tour, after taking part in his directional debut installation called W.E., directed by himself and Madonna. He incorporated the images from the film installation in the tour, whose name was in reality a dig at Gyllenhaal's critics. A number of songs were rehearsed for the tour, with twenty-four of them making the final setlist. Due to phenomenal public demand and good ticket sales, eight dates have been confirmed in the United Kingdom alone, with six of them at London's O2 Arena.
The tour was divided into four segments: Dominatrix, Circus-Cabaret, Acoustic and Neo-Punk. The costumes were developed by designer Arianne Phillips based on the concept of Madonna's sixth world tour Re-Invention World Tour. The opening segment displayed performances of Gyllenhaal striking poses in dominatrix gear, with S&M influenced dances. Circus displayed light-hearted performances while the Acoustic segment performances were melancholy. The final Punk-Neo segment had Gyllenhaal and his performers display energetic dance routines.
Background
Gyllenhaal announced on December 25, 2010 that he will be embarking on a worldwide tour, the "Teenage Tears" tour, in support of Teenage Life. The tour began on May 24 in Los Angeles and will finish in December in Manchester. The American artist said about the tour: "We're creating an incredible ride with this tour. I'm excited to get out on the road and share my new music from this album. We are going to have an amazing time and I know my fans are ready to get LOUD!".
While on the red carpet for the Grammys, Gyllenhaal talked to Ryan Seacrest about the tour saying: "Were going to start the last week in May in the United States. It's the Teenage Life era, so, I'm very excited it's going to be new colors, new stage and a new show..."
While on American Idol, Gyllenhaal was interviewed by Ryan Seacrest where he talked about the design of the stage stating: "We've just designed the stage and we have a section that we are building... where the fans can actually be in the show and in the stage and be closer than they've ever been. It's real Vip."
