Fisting (sometimes called handballing) is a sexual activity that involves inserting a hand into the vagina or rectum. Once insertion is complete, the fingers either naturally clench into a fist or remain straight. In more vigorous forms of fisting, such as "punching", a fully clenched fist may be inserted and withdrawn slowly. Fisting may be performed with or without a partner.
Techniques
The "Silent Duck", also called "Duck-Billing", is the technique much often used in which the person engaging in hand insertion shapes the hand to resemble a duck's beak. Typically, fisting does not involve forcing the clenched fist into the vagina or rectum. Instead, all five fingers are kept straight and held as close together as possible (forming the beak-like "duck"), then slowly inserted into a well lubricated vagina or rectum.
Fistees who are more experienced may take two fists (double-fisting) in the vagina or rectum. In the case of double-fisting, pleasure is derived more from the stretching of the anus or vagina than from the thrusting (in-and-out) movement of hands.
For anal fisting a lubricant is typically used. Crisco is a popular lubricant for this purpose amongst the gay/BDSM communities, with other personal lubricants, such as J-Lube and silicone based products, also very popular.
Risks
Vaginal fisting has caused death by means of air embolism. In general, sexual activities that cause air to enter the vagina can be fatal, with heightened risk during pregnancy. Anal fisting can cause severe injuries to the receptive participant, who may require hospitalization and surgery; in the absence of treatment it has also been known to cause death.
Anal fisting carries risks of colorectal perforation; participants are advised to use latex gloves and lubricant, and designate a safeword, the utterance of which will call an immediate halt to the activity. The practice along with the insertion of hard objects into the anus has been significantly related to the traumatization of the rectal mucosa in increasing the likelihood of infection, including HBV.
In pornography and performance
Pornographic actresses who have engaged in the act on camera include Aria Giovanni, C.J. Laing, Chloe, Kylie Ireland, Belladonna, Jenna Haze, and Audrey Hollander. The 1978 film Candy Stripers features two fisting scenes.
An erotic actress specializing in fisting (both vaginal and anal) and large dildos is O-Pearl. The popular internet nude model Zsanett Égerházi (Sandy) sometimes engages in vaginal fisting for 21Sextury.

- Gloves may be used to prevent sexually transmitted diseases, prevent foreign bodies (such as rings) from getting 'lost' internally, and simply to reduce the likelihood of minor cuts and scratches caused by sharp fingernails. Gloves available include those made of latex or, for those with a latex sensitivity or allergy, vinyl or nitrile.
